Yes there is a difference, but as all have said go the 70cc route. My original two saw plan was a Stihl MS261 (50cc) and a Stihl MS460(77cc). Both considered pro model saws. A 70 cc is a perfect compliment to a 50...but be mindful of CAD as others have said.
I now own seven saws. :saw:...four new this year including a 59cc Stihl MS361.

Just get a ported 346/350 and call it a day:eek: one of those will cut just about everything a wood burner needs to cut....I love mine.

Heck my ported out little Poulan 335 will run circles around that 346. The last one I did had 210psi on the compression and the saw only cost me about 95 dollars. What's that 346 run you.

I tell ya Brad you need to learn how to repair saws. You can get some older saws that need repair for pretty cheap and have some fun at the same time. You can do it.

Those are great saws. Extra light and lots-o-powa.

I found my old (circa 1993) 026 powerhead (bought new by me) in my old warehouse last month. My MS290 replaced it in 2010. Saw is dirty as anything and needs some basic work. If memory serves me correct it was running okay when it was replaced. Sitting downstairs with the other saws.
There was a real nice used 026 on CL last week for cheap.

You should take that 026 and get out your phone and take some pictures of it and start taking it apart. I would replace the crank seals. The intake boot, fuel line, and impulse line.

Getting to the crank seals is not as hard as you would think if you know a few tricks that I can personally take you through step by step. The biggest think you need would be a compressor and an impact gun. That is for removing the flywheel and clutch. Then for removing the old seals you need a drill and some sheet metal screws and some needle nose pliers for prying out the old seals. I have some with long handles which makes the prying a lot easier. Also a small block of wood or something else for the pliers to rest on as your prying. Then use a deep well socket to press in the new seals by tapping with a hammer.

Thanks for the seal replacement lesson. That’s pretty much how I had it figured. I’m fixing to do a set on a 181 directly.

Good for you. If you have any other questions just ask. This stuff is not rocket science and anybody can learn how to do it.

I’m fairly mechanical handy, but you know how it is when you try something new. The worst part for me and saw repairs is finding the parts for the older stuff & no dealer to work with

That is when the internet is your friend. I live in a town of about 185 people so I buy everything on line because there is no place near by who carries old parts for saws. I have gotten a lot of old saws for free because no one wants to work on them or try and find parts for them.

Probably about the population here too.
Even with the internet I have a hard time finding some parts, probably just haven’t learned all the sources yet. And I don’t do eBay & pay pal, I’d like to keep it that way but times are changing. HL Supply and Bailey’s get it done most of the time.

Some folks have more saws than you can shake a stick. They remind me of some guitar players that I know who have 10-15 guitars when only a couple will do.I can't figure it out.I have two saws and that takes care of what I need to do.

    That would be me.
I have about 50 running saws.
I also play guitar and have about 20 guitars an entire PA system and 4 different guitar amps. It is part of the fun having more than one.
I am 70 and not done yet.
