Wish I had a chipper. Of course that would mean more work for me LOL. Really been considering buying one for the tractor. Only problem is it’s a JD with drawbar not 3 point hitch. So more work again. Years ago I saved almost everything. Nowadays I’d rather leave the branches lie. If it’s in my yard I’ll still cut em up. Gotta clean up anyway.
Since I'm running out of room, if it's not super easy to split I will leave it where it lies or if it's at my house I'll just throw it in the back of the truck and take it to the dump......or leave it for firepit usage.....Even rounds that are smallish say 6-8" I give away to neighbors in the you-split-it-you-take-it program I have going on. While I wouldn't go as far as to say I'm going for perfect splits of firewood I will say that I have raised the bar in terms of quality. Any cuts off I have from rounds that are too long I give away as well and if they are too big I'll whack 'em up with the x27. It all depends on what your time's worth. I'm happy to share the loot but I get first dibs on the wood and as long as everyone knows which pile they are allowed to take from, it's all good. Left pile is giveaway. Right pile is mine.
About 2" for me, also. it kind of depends on how straight it is, etc. When I reach a spot where it just seem like too much trouble, that is where I stop.
Depends on what part of the season we are in and how wood getting is going lol. Early in the season it's 2in and up, late in the season I will keep darn near everything
I'm in the same boat as you. I'll keep anything straight at this point especially if its dead standing.
Sometimes it depends on the time of day to determine what size I keep. The later in the day and the more tired I become, the throw away size seems to get larger.
Also it's very nice that I have an organic dump I have access to at the drop of a.....text message to the foreman....and then that's my trade-up program.....where I dump the rotten/undesirables and pick up whatever is at the dump that fancies me eyes.
The rare occasion i get as full tree (i scrounge most of my wood roadside) ill go to 2", but the last couple years ill go to 3". 4-5" rounds get halved. I use scrap boards split with a hatchet for kindling.
Yeah, we have a tree dump around every little town around me and I LOVE to cherry pick from there. Its like shopping.
