This will be the third winter my 9 yo son will be selling firewood in front of our house. Each year gets busier and busier for him. He has just under 10 cords ready to go and I suspect it will all get sold with no problem. This kid is going to have quite the nest egg by the time he graduates high school

Quite the little entrepreneur you have there. That will go a long way in life.

I love this post it’s so encouraging to hear a young person willing to work for a reward. He’s experiencing something wonderful that the majority of young folks & perhaps some not so young folks never to feel.

It’s a sense of accomplishment & fulfillment you can never get after stepping away from a computer keyboard or a television set or a stupid phone.

Man, just imagine the difference in our world if all teenagers had that kind of drive, instead of just staring at a screen all day...

And you figure he's only 9!!!

As much as I like to try and instill work ethic in my kids, I do believe a lot of hard working people are internally driven. Pushing them to work hard may inspire them to always work hard, or may turn them off from hard work and do the opposite you want. You see a lot of families that raised all the kids the same way, yet some are super hard working, and others are super lazy.

Yeah, you often see an outlier or two with large family's...in general though, I think most people tend to end up being a lot like their parents...eventually...some take longer than others to figure their stuff out...a few never do. (it helps a lot if they pick good friends too)

He is pretty driven but he has his moments when his stand is almost empty and he doesn't want to fill it up. (it takes him 30-45 minutes by himself if it's pretty empty) Some days he gets off the bus and knows he only has limited time to play outside so when his motivation is low, my wife or I will often go out and help him.
His younger sister is the kind of kid who would be perfectly content sitting in front of a screen all day long but we don't allow that. She enjoys being outside as well but needs that extra nudge.
As far as people wishing more kids had that drive, a certain extent of it comes down to the parents. Far too many adults give their kids everything so why would they want to work for something?

And I totally agree - this young man is doing it right!
