Was recently scrounging some small diameter green BL and cutting lengths to load in my PU. Im unloading them the other day and one looked ideal for a mailbox post. Anyone ever sell these? If so what is the going rate? I was going to ask $75 for this forked one. 6" diameter. Couple others in this pile id consider selling. Still have a few ore to buck from the original source.
I would be shocked if you’re able to get that for them but good for you if you can! I think black locust posts reach top value when they are bigger than traditional lumber which these aren’t. If I were buying something that size, I would just go with pressure treated
If you can get $75 for that, I will hook up, load up the flatbed & head that way with the semi. More power to you if you can get $75 for it. Around here Osage fence posts sell for : 4” - 10”dia. x 8’ long line posts = $12-$15 10” - 24” dia. x 10’ long Corner/Brace $25-$35
I have never thought about that but thanks for idea brad. I need to update my mailbox and post. I might do something with a piece of BL
The log was 6" and about 12" apart at the top fork. Doesnt look it in the photos. Logs range from 4-10" in the mound.
It was just a thought. I did a bit of research and not really sold much around here. I did save it and two others from the saw today.
It’s not a bad thought at all if you can get $75 or even $50 for them. Worst that’s going to happen is no one buys them. You still have them for firewood. I hope you can sell a pile of them.
I still have 5-6 trees blown over at the score...6-9" diameter. Ive only learned of BL's rot resistance in the last couple years. The tree is not that common around here. Got it for nothing so ill give it a try.
It’s all about marketing. I wouldn’t be surprised if you could get $50 or $60 for a highly rot resistant, locally sourced, all organic, Black Locust artisan mail box post. Hurry, only one left! I’d give it a try on CL or FB marketplace. Only try to sell one at a time, make them seem rare or hard to come by.
Careful Brad. You stuff those green locust posts in the ground and they may sprout Actually that’d be cool!!
That it would. One on the sections had little spouts that didnt wither since the time i cut them. I had tried planting a piece of cherry that was sprouting last year but it died. Think i waited too long.
I had a couple of green locust logs I cut last winter put out some sprouts. Stihl waiting on my bandmill guy to get here.
Brad, Here is an add on the local swap shop, maybe you can market your Locust posts this way as well as mailbox posts, except charge a bit more than $5.
