Hm the manual mentions a NGK BMPR 7A plug but in my pic it shows a BMP6A plug.

Thanks, what I meant to say was that in the pic of my saw, you can see someone put a BMP6A plug in there.........

    This ^ ^ ^
Changing one heat range is no big deal...was pretty common to go one or two heat ranges hotter back in the old days to reduce plug fouling...some of those old 2 stroke oils were kinda crude (and therefore a rich mix)

You can run either plug. I ran the bosch for years when they were made in Germany and Brazil. Then they switched to China and I had 1 or 2 that failed from new. The NGK are available from most auto parts stores. I get mine at NAPA. Your old air filter should be 2 pieces. I separate mine and use starting fluid to remove oil and grime. Then blow out with air. Some carb cleaner can be hard on plastic parts. Not sure If you have the IPL so here it is.

    Use the BPMR7A.

The AM air filter may give you issues on this model. Clean the oem and you should be good unless the flocking is worn off in spots.

Awesome find. My first Stihl was an 028 from 1985. I was 17 and right after hurricane Gloria
I bought a good used one back in April and ran it yesterday. Run it at 40:1 which i do for all my saws and OPE. Here's a link on the 028

The used 028 i bought in April was the super as was my original one from 1985.
I remember the metal carb cover screw and the "S" designation.

    Thanks for the IPL!
Ok. Will still order the AM one as a backup unless I can find an oem one. I'm guessing I can't.
    Thanks for the link!

I'm a big fan of NGK...and like you, I've seen a few failures with Bosch and Nippendenso...but NGK are almost bulletproof when new. Any of them are better than Champion though! :startled:

So is it safe to use brake cleaner to clean the air filter out? Toothbrush and mineral spirits better? Looks like it was never cleaned.....

I either just blow them out with compressed air, or if really dirty down in, I'll run it through the parts washer, then wash that out with hot water, blow out with air again, then let dry before installing. For foam filters I usually use filter oil on it then...but I don't think that's needed or even wanted with this type of filter.
I would worry that brake cleaner might dissolve the glue/etc...just depends on the brand BC that is being used...carb cleaner might be better?
I dunno...I always use air or parts washer fluid...but I doubt you have access to that so...

I have a small air compressor but I don't have parts washer fluid. It does seem pretty gummed up from the oily sawdust. How about just dish soap and a gentle scrubbing with a toothbrush?

As I said in my earlier post I use starting fluid. Use outdoors and the blow off with air. It really cleans out the oily gunk.

That would work for sure...starting fluid is good for cleaning parts...I tend to use it more than brake cleaner because its not nearly as bad for you, as far as breathing the fumes, and what may absorb through skin, if exposed...and bonus, its a little cheaper too.
