Well, a real estate friend of mine called me up and said "Hey man! I got this chainsaw that I acquired that's been sitting in a garage for a long time! Can you take a look at it?"

There was almost no fuel and some oil had dripped into the case. I went out and bought fuel but came home too late to try it out.

The saw hardly looks used. I believe it's an 18" bar based on the chain. There was a brain new chain in the case.

I traded it for a face cord of dry firewood.

I have a question on what to do in terms of the oil/fuel mixture. The manual specifically says to mix "other" brands at 25:1 and Stihl 2-cycle oil at 40:1 or 50:1.

I've never owned a gas powered chainsaw and seeing as how this thing was depricated backed in the mid 1980s......I don't know how much oil I need to add to the fuel.

I bought 6-gallon 2-stroke oil at HD. It says mix 89-octane at 50:1.

So do I do 50:1 or 25:1?? I'll take the spark plug and check it but from the outside it looks kind of new.

I'll have to wait until Monday to start it. Also anyone know the difference between the 26TS-74 Super chain and the 26RS-74 Super chain? It's a .325 pitch and .063 gauge chain 18". I can't find anything on TS Stihl chains, only that RS stands for Rapid Super (full chisel).

Here's an updated section of the manual that shows more info but I'm still confused on the oil/gas ratio.

Oil has changed significantly since that manual was printed...personally, I run everything (OPE) on the same semi synthetic oil at 32:1...but I would have no problem with running a quality synthetic at 40:1. Some people like 50:1, which is fine, just depends how long you want it to last...or if you like a little "insurance" for your engine or not...

And just to be clear...the first (larger) number is "parts of gasoline", the :1 means "to one" part of oil...so the larger the first number, the less oil is in the gas "per part" or the leaner it is, oil wise. Just sayin...not sure if everybody understands exactly what those numbers mean.
So from that last chart, you would add 3.2 oz oil per gallon of gas to get 40:1

And nice score on that saw BTW! Hope it runs like a top for ya!

    Thanks!

Well I'm hoping it runs as well or else I'm out some wood! hahahaha. Just kidding, even if I have to fix it I'm excited.

The oil I bought says 50:1 so I'll mix 8oz into 5 gallons and see how that goes.

You agree that the saw doesn't look like it was used much eh? ~35 years old I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

8oz in 5 gallons is 100:1 (super oil lean) and a lot of premix to use up right before winter...sure you don't want to mix up a gallon, just see if it runs first?
And yes, appears to be a well cared for low hour saw...might earn you a "you suck" award if it runs good ;)

I bought one from my neighbor years back for sixty dollars, I put a new spark plug, new gas and bar oil in it and it started up just fine. I mix mine 40 to 1 and never had any problems.

I did take mine to the Local Stihl dealer just to go through it and everything was fine. The original bar on my saw was 14 or 15 inches so I bought a bigger bar for it, 16 inch I think.

Congrats on the new to you saw, you'll like it.

I don't know how to read a chart I guess. It says 12.8oz to 5 gallons, not 8oz.

I could do 1 gallon but I'd need to get a smaller container. I only have 5 gallon NATO spec metal jerry cans.

Thanks man. That gives me some hope!

Unless you use a lot of premix gas, sounds like its time to get one...1 gallon can is pretty cheap anyways...myself, I can hardly use up 1 gallon before it goes bad, let alone 5! :bug:

Ordering this one. I use the same one in the 5 gallon version. These guys are studs. When we had Hurricane Sandy on a Tuesday I ordered it and got 4 of them on Thursday. Love these cans. Sturdy and a million times better than those plastic pieces of junk. Technically "illegal" to use but I won't use anything else!

I use the flexible hose for the can and have 2 because I'm always losing one of them!

5 gallons will last me a couple of years, I suggest you get a gallon can. I would run ethanol-free gas in that saw for sure.

The biggest reason I use the 2 1/2 gallon no spill is that it fits perfect in the back of the Rhino and won't tip over when climbing hills.

Thanks will look up ethanol free gas stations around me. And this is why I like my electric chainsaw!! No gas, oil, storage, etc. to hassle with.....but this saw has a 43cc engine so it should provide a little more oomph than the Makita......

I think I go get a can of true fuel and use that. No mixing and won’t go bad for a while,

Lots of things on that saw. First off the saw looks pristine for it's age. I like old saws in cases.:) I've never seen a stihl F bar or TS chain. Is the TS chain stihl brand? Looks like it should be comparable to the stihl 26RS-74. If it has been sitting for a long time the rubber parts (fuel lines, carb gaskets etc.) may be deteriorated. As Warner said I would just buy a can of trufuel mix . Take the echo oil back. OEM parts are getting a bit harder to get for that saw. It doesn't look like that saw has a chain brake just a hand guard. Here is a link to the Acres site. Read the comment at the bottom of the page about chain brake.

Early ones were 43 CC. They were then bumped up to 47 CC. The 028Super Woodboss was 51.4 CC.
