I took down a couple apple trees for a neighbor. Looked exactly like that, twisted and funky but burns great and smells amazing! One caveat, I think you’re going to need to let it season till next year. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it needs a little time.
It seems very dry. it's all cracked and the bark is falling off. I haven't checked it with my moisture meter yet. But my arborist buddy said it had all been standing dead in the back of the orchard for 3+ years, so hopefully it will be ready to go. If I do have to let it season, I still have plenty of other wood to burn
I have about 3/4 of a cord of it seasoning now. It's a scarce score for me so I don't think I'll heat with it but rather explore trading/selling some for cooking wood. I did a large batch of pulled pork with it and it was awesome so letting the smell go up the pipe seems wasteful.
Apple is my favorite firewood. Smells fantastic and is higher on the btu chart than most, great for using in a smoker. As others have stated, I'd save it for special occasions. I remember it being sold at around 400 dollars a cord a year or two ago.
Well Dennis I do believe that you are correct. I suggest that he fire up the smoker and scare up some yummy pig pieces.
My father loved it, not readily available, the aroma. My husband used it for smoking meat the one time we had some.
