Swung by my public scrounge area early this morning. It has been restocked. Plenty of red oak, sugar maple and some kind of hickory.

Definitely Hickory. You can tell by the leaves, the stringy wood, and how the branches turn almost 90 degrees. I'd say Pignut. I have a few on my property.

This is the first time I have ever seen this much wood there. In the past it was hit or miss. I’m guessing storm Isaias and also a front that came through a few weeks ago.

Hickory for sure. I'm not real good on hickory anything past smooth bark or shag bark. None that firewood sucks....go get it all.

Its really too bad there aren't more places where people could get wood like that. But, sad to say, it is people who ruin it.

I’ve quit id’ing trees via the internet However, that wood looks like it will be great firewood once split and stacked for a while.

Man I’d like to have a scrounge area like that! Would make things much easier.

    Exactly. Get it all!!!

Yeah, looks like it could be pignut hickory, but it's absolutely some sort of hickory.

I seem to go by once a week or so, yes take all you want. I noticed the area a few years ago. I have probably gotten 2 cord of wood out of there over the years and have seen a few other cutters in there. Once while I was cutting a Granby officer stopped in and mentioned that I was working too hard on a Sunday and we had a friendly conversation. As I said this is the most wood I have ever seen there.

Was able to go cutting today. Filled the truck with nice red oak splits and rounds. [IMG]
