Nice vid. I honestly thought there would be a lot more smoke coming out of the wet wood stack. I've seen MUCH more smoke coming out of some chimneys round here.
Nice video. I would be interested to see a long term study be done. "Dry" firewood vs. "wet" firewood for a season.
Wow....38% is extreme wet wood! I wish I had the option to always burn dry wood under 20%, but sadly, my space for wood storage is only winters worth of burning, about 5 cord. I try to get my wood chopped, split and stacked as early in the spring as I can. I'm sure most of my wood is not 20% or less dry. However, it is nowhere near 38% either.
Great video. Some of our friends burn huge rounds (8” +) of wood that’s been drying for less than 6 months and there’s always smoke coming out of their chimney and their house never feels warm. They do however, like to boast about how long the logs last. Even more annoying is some of the wood is oak which I’d love to get my hands on.
Perhaps someone could go to the website mentioned at the end of that video and pull more videos or other appropriate infos to this thread.
Then the big option is to concentrate on those types of wood that can dry well enough to burn good. They may not give the longer burn times, but wood like soft maple (red) can indeed dry enough if split and stacked in the right place and stacked a bit loosely. And red maple also produces good coaling so would be a natural choice for you. Of course there are also other types of wood you could get.
Hey, I think I get it now! Water won't burn? The first OWB I bought was back in 93. The dealer that sold it told me that there are many who believe that the OWB burns green/wet wood and the fire will last longer that way. He called BS on that theory way back then and told me to get dry wood in the OWB and I'd be much happier. Unfortunately, there are way too many wood burners (of all types of stoves-indoor or outdoor) that don't bother getting their wood supply until the fall of every year. Some things will never change. "I WAS CURED ALL RIGHT...." LOL. I'm sure even if you forced people with bad habits to give up a minute of their time to watch this, half of them would shrug their shoulders and think "yeah, but my green wood lasts longer!" or "Okay, maybe I'll get my wood in the spring instead of the fall; that will fix it...." Some people are as dense as the wet Oak they smolder in their stoves.

Yup! But, be sure it isn't pine, for goodness sakes, you'll burn down the house from a chimney fire!!!!!
