I built and gave him a 16" chainsaw measuring stick thingy. After seeing it on YT and seeing someone trying to sell it for $25, I made it myself. I've since switched to hi-vis orange paint but you get the idea. It's got a magnet on one side so you can just go along a down trunk and measure out 16" *perfectly*....... But I don't think his guys use it......
That's nice of him to send you the pic... Just because he says it's coming down, are you sure he's bringing it to you? He might just be sending you the pic to tease you?? Wouldn't that be a kick in the ol nads...
Looks like a fair amount of wood there...I know it’s nice to think tree guys can take the time/effort to buck everything to a desired size, but that just isn’t how it works on most job sites. Difficult drops, obstructions, time, dealing with traffic, new groundies, etc. all lead to the oddball lengths arborists may generate. Time is money for many jobs... and the time gets used up quickly dealing with the wood and debris.
Good score. My tree service buddy brought me some but they were huge. Took all the fun out of it. Those are perfect.
Nice deal, I would be happy to get logs, I don't mind bucking to my length. A few shortie will fit in the stove too.
He's a straight up kind of guy. I worked with him for a day.....and saw the dark side for a little bit... heh heh... But I was treated like any other rookie....and that's how I want to be treated. Make a dumb mistake? Get a smack on the head (so to speak). He's given me probably 75% of the wood I've received.....We're probably at around 40 cords now........so let's just round it off and say he gave me 30 cords.....free.......and a truckload of wood chips....and did tree work for me......for free...... I paid him back a little bit (on top of saving him dumping fees) with two packs of the Stone & Skillet muffins.......and I delivered a face cord of wood in the bed of the Tacoma to a customer of his.....dried and ready to burn.....no charge (of course). He's even offered to lend me his dump truck if I need it. That's very generous of him.....and it reminds me of the movie "Pay It Forward". I wish more people would do that. Not everything is about money........all the time..... I also told him anytime he wants firewood for himself he can have as much as he wants.
All you can do is ask..........and I don't mind whipping out the chainsaw and cutting down the long ones....it's the shorties I don't want...because I can't make them longer! More use of the chainsaw = more practice sharpening and I'm down with that. This is what I did on the last load of ash he brought a few weeks ago....... When I received it: During: And after: I take all the cutoffs and split 'em up with the x27 and give them away to people with firepits. I take the sawdust and mix it into my compost pile. I take the big chips and put them in a bucket destined for the chipper and then the compost pile and/or as mulch. Any really crappy, knotty, rotten, or otherwise below my specifications of perfect rounds go in a pile and when I have enough I take 'em to the dump and exchange them for the nice rounds they have laying around. I'm in no particular rush.....so I enjoy my time spent splitting, sawing, sweeping, and smelling.
I was trying to build the perfect ash pile.....these are some pics of the holz hausen being built. It's almost done so I'm going to have to build another stack right next to it. I contaminated the stack with some black oak thinking I wasn't gonna get any ash anytime soon and of course 2 days after doing that I got a huge load of ash from the same tree guy.
Must be the same guys I call for a tree too close to wires or the house. He: "what length rounds do you want ?" Me: "16". He: "Most people want 18". Me: "Ok, then, 18". " Do I get 18" ? Of course not. Anything from 14 to 22 or so. 3 times now we've had this same conversation. The last time, halfway thru the job I told them to feel free to leave me logs. They've been doing tree work since they were teens. Both of the owners are older than me and I'm old.
I think a lot of people think they can do 16" (or whatever length) on demand...........but when you start stacking up the rounds (which they never do) you get everything but! I once had a flood in my kitchen......and to make a long story short, the restoration guy said "You had a mid to low grade kitchen so we won't be able to justify using a kitchen designer"........and I said "No problem, I'll design it." I drew it out in Sketchup and printed it on giant 11 x 19 paper that I specifically bought a ream for this task.......and when I came home from work I saw one of the upper cabinets installed in the wrong place. Some people just don't get it.....
It’s difficult to get uniformity when others are cutting up the logs. One guy cut too long for my splitter and another cut so short I didn’t want them in a stack. I just started asking for logs. Also get more wood on the truck when left in 10-12’ lengths.
