I'm thinking 3 more battles, which will bring the total to 12 battles/24 types of firewood. Then begins the semi finals.
This has been fun to watch, but I don’t get to play often because very few of the species are available to me
southwestern choke cherry > red maple ....... throws more heat, smells great and I never noticed an abundance of ash but I'll check that from now on.
About the only two on the chart that are common around me are ash and elm (not sure what specific species of either) and I already know how that would go,........ poor elm gets no respect
You mustve read my mind SBA! I thought of this yesterday while reading one of your other wood battle threads. RM most common tree in CT. Seasons in a year (as does cherry) Ive had nice straight maple and cherry and ive had twisted ones. Either easy to split when straight and knot free. The cherry i scored two weeks ago split like a dream. The last red maple i scored was twisty grained. Maple gets my vote.
Hands down, Black Cherry! It is dual purpose wood. It can heat your house and smoke your meat. I smoked a Boston butt today with black cherry.
You guys will enjoy tomorrows battle. Since its a long holiday weekend, I'm thinking two battles are in order for tomorrow
I’ve never burnt red maple and don’t have any available. But I’ve burnt a lot of cherry. It is always available on my property. To be honest that’s the only reason I process it. Burning it by itself is almost aggravating, Even in a fire pit it don’t burn complete. I do enjoy the smell so I burn it a lot in the pit. It does ok in the stove mixed half and half with ash with the ash on bottom. I have a 20” cherry waiting on me from a storm. I hate to let it waste so I will process it.
I think red maple is one of our most abundant trees and get huge!! The only downside is the pretty colors in fall which make driving difficult when city people show up!! That was a red! 661 with 42” bar
