Baled hay in Oct for the first time in my life

It will be baleage, not dry hay but even so, I've never done it before. Neighbor needed some help today. They were trying to run soybeans and bale so I gave them a hand.

 

Ours came in in November last year. A neighboring dairy farmer does it as not quite dry wrapped rounds for us. In early September he switches to corn, and then it was poor haying weather for a long time. The day after they baled it snowed, and it stayed snow-covered for several weeks. We bought some mulch to resell one year, and the guy baled some Reed Canary in January! (Nice field!)

 

My cousin in Neb. just finished soybeans and hoping for a few dry days to start corn.

 

They started bringing in corn in September here this year....never seen that before.

 

It go time...the beans and corn are flying out of the fields around here this week!
My neighbor has made hay in October often...but then he isn't known for doing things the normal way either
He really banged it out this year though...finished up second crop in September...yeah, second crop...he usually only gets one

 

They took the beans off the 15-20 (ish) acre field behind me last night...48' head...they were done in about 1/2 hr...would have been less, but it is an odd shaped field and that makes for a lot of jacking around with a machine that large.
Wasn't too many years ago a grain head 1/3 that wide was considered big around here...

 

Does anyone else get inundated with Asian beetles when the bean fields are harvested? I have thousands of dead beetles around my house thanks to having the house sprayed a couple weeks ago. The Asian beetles look like lady bugs but the Asian ones bite.

 

The Asian lady beetles and stink bugs never seem to completely go away anymore... certainly the worst in the fall though.

Thats good! There are quite a few fields round home that could be cut again. Won't be a lot of bales compared to a "normal" cutting, but depending on the winter, every bale could count... We got really dry this summer, so much so that there was some corn cut for silage (even dry for silage) just to try to get something out of it... But amazingly the weather ended up turning around when needed so most guys did well with hay.

 

Can't wait for it to come off here. Should be any day now.

 

Just silage corn in this area, and a September frost often dictates the schedule. Next door neighbor is baling today - big field - expected 7 4x4 bales!

 

I had Wil-Kil come out to spray. They sprayed the outside of the house. I have them come once per year, usually in September. Before we had them come and spray, we would have to vacuum hundreds of them that got into the house. They really made a vacuum bag stink.

 

We had the asian lady bugs bad for a couple years. They suppposedly are attracted to white and I have a white house, even the roof was white until a few years ago. There would be thousands of them on the house in October . Last couple of years there haven't been any. So far so good on the stink bugs. Have only caught one inside so far but it hasn't been all that cold yet and they are on the window screens here and there.

billb3 I have noticed when we get the asian beetles they seem to like the warmth of the sun. They follow the sun around the house from the part that faces mostly south to the part of the house that faces west.
