One thing for sure is that for many, many moons now we've been able to use our driver's license for ID. But now we can't... We have to take a birth certificate. Old driver license is not proof any more.

My wife received a notice that her driver license was expiring and has to be renewed. However this must be done this year at one of the SOS offices. We have one of those 15 miles from us so not a problem. But...

4 documents are required and we thought we had them until she went to the appointment.

Problem #1 was at first we could not even make an appointment (one is required). Well, we finally was able to get one, but ran into another snag. The things she had to take were her SS card, her marriage license, a copy of a bank statement and her birth certificate.

Needless to say I was a bit hot about these requirements, especially considering she has had a license since 1960. A marriage license? Bank statement? What do these have to do with it? Then the topper was the birth certificate was not good enough. It has the right seal, but was not certified... So now we have to drive 60+ round trip miles to get the right one and it will cost $26.00. Add in another 60 miles for the 2 trips to the SS office and add in the time...

Maybe our state is turning out like WeldrDave says his state is?

I typed the above just before we left for Saginaw. We're back so now I have to hope I can set another apt at the SOS.

At least we had a color tour.

Not sure any state can get as bad as NJ so you're still ahead of the game. NJ, NY, CA they are at the bottom of the barrel IMO.

But I feel your pain and sorry you had to go through all that trouble Dennis!!

Dennis, I believe the added paperword is for the enhanced license stuff. I had to take my stuff in, but now I can fly or visit Canada.

We’ve got something similar if you want to get a “Real ID”.
Didn’t need the the ss card I know, because I haven’t seem mine in years. Passport, birth certificate, a current bill...
Went to AAA and got it done. 5 minutes.
I’ve heard worse stories so I think I was lucky.
Otherwise you get a regular license and it’s not proof of id for somethings, like getting on a plane

People demand enhanced security when traveling by plane so a new form of ID was required. The new enhanced ID is not required for a drivers license in most states but is handy if you want to fly.

Papers please!, Sir you're papers are not in order, will you please come with us. That is an order sir, you don't have an option..
Liberty is slipping thru our fingers as we breath and no one seems to care enough to stop it. Or we are loony when we say something about it.

All states are required to issue a "real ID" now, if you want access to a federal building you need one of these licenses now, especially if you want to fly.
I opted out of it, I shouldn't need a ID to enter a building that belongs to all of us!

It's a shame that people working inside those federal buildings need the safety and protections .

i guess if it keeps a terrorist from flying a plane into a building I'm (kinda) ok with it...(kinda)
Not sure thats what its all about though...

I cant find my SS card and asked if tax return would work. Nope. So no card needed for taxes just what I put down, but cant use the taxes to back up who I am for a id. Ok, guess I wont be getting one.

I would get a replacement SS card ASAP. They don't require a RealID ID to get into every Federal building yet, but if/when they do, you will have to have a Real ID to get into a federal building to get a replacement ss card if you can't do it online ( like here where a passport will work and you can't get a replacement ss card online). A rather inconvenient catch-22 . I don't think you can get a Mass license any more that is not a readID ID.
