What did you use for top strapping on the wood crates EDIT: just read prior posts and my question answered,
Not too much progress on the wood. I did get about a cord of Black Locust that is in rounds right now awaiting destiny with the Super split. I also have about 1/3rd of a cord of dead Elm, also in rounds. I did get some metal panels for covering the stacks and boxes. For more detail on that see this thread. Some cheap stack coverings I hope to get the Black Locust and the Elm split and boxed up this week.
Locust ! Love that stuff. What's that "deck pan" cut off's? Did you screw it down, that stuff can really sail in a strong wind. I would hear mind 300' away in the middle of the night defying gravity.
I’m not sure what the metal is from. I’d say it’s around 24-26 gauge. I do plan to weight them down with some pieces of wood.
Looking good. I'd have to park a tank on that stuff to keep it there. Hopefully you don't get the wind we do here in the cornfield
I did an inventory check on my IBC totes. I have 8 full of Red Maple and Black Birch, 6 full of Eastern White Pine, 3 full of Cherry, and 3 full of shorts and chunks. Looks like my best BTU wood is the Black Birch. I’ll likely start on the Pine, then move into the Red Maple and Cherry, then save the Black Birch for the colder weather. I’ll finish the spring with more Pine. Next year I’ll have better options, like 3 year Red Oak, Black Locust, Cherry, Ash, and Elm, along with a bunch of Pine.
I brought in 4 totes of wood this morning. Three of Pine and 1 of Cherry. I stacked that in my basement, and started filling the empty totes. I started on the dead Elm. Yeaaaahhhhhh....... If that's "easy" for Elm ,then I'm good with Elm. In fact, as I sit here drinking my Pumpkin Ale, I have to wonder, why on earth would anyone go out of there way to get Elm? This stuff is stringier than a yarn shop in a tornado. An excellent punishment for a prisoners would be to put them on a freezing deserted island, and dump off a few dozen cords of fresh cut Elm rounds. Then hand them all lightweight short handled hatchets and tell them they have to split the Elm or they cant leave the island. Anyways, I ended up filling one cage with Elm, and two with Locust. I have enough Locust left to almost fill one more cage.
Looking good SBA! Yup, thats why the word "elm" makes me cringe. Ask The Wood Wolverine for his pics of elm "shreds". A lot worse than yours.
On a positive note, the Locust split pretty decently. Some of the pieces were a little stringy, but nothing like the Elm street horror. At the end I split some Red Oak (the little guy I found on the side of the road on the way home with the Locust). I was quickly reminded how easy and wonderfully it splits. Felt like coming home to see an old friend. Felt good it did.
I've got 7 cages filled since Sunday. Left to right Black Locust, Elm, Black Locust, Black Birch/Maple mix, Black Locust, Cherry, Black Birch The splitter mods are working out well to stage splits. I forgot what member mentioned this, but it seemed like a good idea to let moisture out of the small Birch splits so they hopefully don't rot.
I get blamed for everything! Just for that snide remark im going to go hoarding tomorrow. Seriously though SBA you are kicking azz in the firewood making department. How is you locust mania doing?
Sounds like it isnt, but if need be, Joe, Eric and myself would be glad to reinfect you! I went to cut at my locust lane spot on Sunday and couldnt get it...gate locked. Talk about a let down...still recovering.
Dammit you’re right Brad!!! Who do I think I am I fooling??? Not even myself!!! I’m off this week and I took a joy ride yesterday through Ware, Belchertown, Amherst, ended up back in Northampton hoping maybe just maybe I’d find some Black Gold on the sides of the road. It wasn’t meant to be. I did see a good leaner in Ware which is only about 25 minutes from my house. Thought of asking the homeowner if I could cut it, but thought it may come off as a little weird
