All <20% mc maple that's ready to burn....shorties and uglies from the center of one of two stacks I'm combining. It's a two way street and it seems that a lot of people forget that.
I love ash, it's a darn shame it's getting wiped out here. If I could burn just one species exclusively it would be ash.
I cut down an eab kill yesterday and today. One about 30” and the other maybe 24. The big one had been dead for a while and the small one barely hanging on. The difference in wood hardness between the 2 was pretty remarkable. I would compare it to the difference between live and dead sycamore.
I get it...but your name is locust post. I haven't split yet but all the ash I've received so far has been hit by EAB. Yeah people don't get it. There's a neighbor (or 2 supposedly) that called the building dept on me and said I was running a business. This is the 3rd time the same code inspector has come out....and this is the 3rd time he's left without giving me a ticket because I ain't doing anything wrong. I told him I am getting pickier with my wood now and that I give away the cutoffs........FOR FREE...... Some people are just nosy a-holes that have nothing better to do.....He was pretty nice about it, suggested I build a fence......I told him I'd think about it but here we have a ridiculous concentration of rocks.....and the cost factor as well doesn't turn me on. He even suggested that I put a sign that says "free cutoffs" with my phone number. What the..... ? I also have two neighbors that split wood and a buddy......and they come and load up their SUVs with splits..........that they split themselves........Sharing the love and this is how I get paid back. Ignorant people are so annoying.

Yeah I didn't get a chance to split anything yet because it started raining and then the wind picked up like crazy. 50+ mph gusts in NW New York but we had a ton of branches fall down all over the place when I drove my kids to piano earlier. I'm kicking myself a little bit because I stacked some of that red oak on top of my pristine ash stack thinking I wasn't gonna get any more ash anytime soon.....and of course that was like 2 days ago!!! Yeah I'm torn between that and red oak. Red oak is indeed easier to split on the straight stuff but way harder on the knotty stuff...and it's way heavier so harder to move and stack.........but both smell so good.......Can't wait to burn it next winter!
Never have had dead sycamore. One wood i avoid as it is hard to hand split. What about black locust green vs. dead. The dead stuff can be like concrete.
Don't let the fools discourage you at all; just keep on doing what is right. As for the inspector, he just probably felt he needed to suggest something just to show he was doing something...even if he was out of line.
Spent the morning chainsawing all the long pieces and yep, this ash was hit by the EAB indeed. Here's a pile that doesn't meet my specifications that I'm giving to my neighbor and my other buddy. After cutting all the long pieces down to 16" Cutoffs I give away for free. Swept clean old school with a broom and a shovel.
The neighbor would probably complain about a sign . (S)he probably watches to make sure everyone and everyone is social distancing properly as well.
Yeah I'm sure she's behind the harassment. All those cutoffs were all chopped up with the maul and in garbage bins. Giving 2 bins away to a new neighbor who walked up to talk about wood and will use it in his firepit.
