Any pictures of the maple bark UW? Maybe norway maple. The waviness of the splits grain suggests that. Norway bark will resemble ash!
That log round right behind the split is the same wood plus here is the picture of the stuff I originally posted last week. It's the logs in the trailer crate.
looks like Norway maple to me. Not 100% sure. Any leaves? I like Norway over red or silver maple. Surprisingly i score very little of it even though it is a common tree around here.
Yes the wood itself could definitely pass for Norway maple, but the bark is not a great match. Sorry it came with no leaves nor was it in an area where I could inspect for leaf evidence. I got it nowhere near where it was standing, the dozer operator at the dump pulled that log out of a pile of tree rubble for me.
Not yet, but he definitely recognizes me and you can say there is chemistry between us haha! believe it or not I still haven't gone there much lately as I have been traveling to Upstate NY and Long Island every few days and with this storm damage I keep discovering new stuff right on local streets so I favor that instead of driving to the dump on the furthest part of town from me and can be hit or miss. It also has a smelly swamp mote surrounding the pile so It's a dirty job many times and they have limited hours of operation. For instance a couple of Sundays I could have gone, but they're closed Sunday.
Just for fun I decided to visit the dump today (could my life get any sadder?). Holy cow..Oak! It was big and heavy so I decided I needed to wedge and sledge it down or I wasn't going to be able to lift into the cab. What a watery laden pain these things were! I actually needed to make slices with the chainsaw to get the wedges to stay or every swing was like thwoink thwoink with the wedge flying out. They needed a lot of coaxing to split even after being cracked pretty wide open. I came up with the solution of adding more mass to the wedges with branches. I thought red oak (which I believe this to be, don't be fooled by the blue) would split more easily, even needed to chainsaw some of the stubborn stringiness free before I could pull them apart. I have had this tough splitting problem before with green pin oak and it helped when I left it to further cure for 4 months before splitting down further. Ugh! now I need to find the space to store these for a few years. Well at least its solid wood for a change, free from degrading decay which I often encounter with my usual dry wood hauls. The final photo shows what I took, but there is another piece in the back seat that's out of view. It was a lot of weight on the car so took it easy going home. I can go back and take more, but I really need dryer stuff as I'm running out of long term seasoning room.
Got to take what is offered. 3 wedges in that one! I've got a monster wedge, 12 inches long, I use on occasions like that.
Most of the time (but not all of the time) when I've buried a handful of wedges just like in the picture, I'll turn the wood onto its side and drive my maul into the bark from between the bottom of the tear and the unsplit end. Stand as far back as is safe because something's going to happen. If I notice this happening in more than one piece I'll start each new piece with a hit on the opposing outside edges before going for the kill in the center. Sent from my SM-A102U using Tapatalk
Bump! Found some dry splits at the dump. Mostly poplar I think. It'll go straight into the basement, won't be long now!
Hooray! midwinter came out of Summer hibernation. Forums not the same unless you're hoarding Molly! Nice grab! Ready made and ready to burn!
Darn Molly you beat my dump scrounge today ...and I'm the one on the prowl for ready burn wood!!!! I have been getting a few scores like this lately from dump and from around traveling as well to visit family. some dry wood here and some will need to season. Today I also got this 75 lb sewer grate today while scrounging dump wood. Not sure what I have planned for it yet, but Ill leave it in my yard and let ideas marinate.... Oooh marinate!! could be a clue
Yes can even make some sort of industrial table or shelf (outdoor or indoor) with a natural log post running up thru middle of circular cut out where it attaches. Just thinking out loud, but could be used as part of an outdoor rustic bar.
I have seen those around the base of trees they plant along the side walk in cities. There would be two of them with the tree in the middle. Where the half moons would make a circle. I kinda got a kick out of like they are trying to keep you away from the dirt in the concrete jungle.
Yes now that you mention it, thats exactly what this must've been! Wonder if the other half is buried somewhere back at the dump?
I've been in a wood drought, but got lucky this morning. Some nice person posted Asplundh cut oak left lying in their front yard. Now I've got a pile of oak in the driveway again. There are a couple chunks left to get, but the highway got closed due to a car fire/accident. I'll go by again this afternoon.
