Hey folks. Got a truckload of yew the other day, already bucked. Nice straight grain stuff made for some real easy chopping. I've never burned yew or even heard of it up to this point. Anyone here burned it before. I've heard it's like oak. I've got it stacked in a half cord and debating on what to charge. I sold a seasoned half cord of madrona this year for $300, thinking about setting the yew at the same price for next year. The cut ends of the yew are bright red. Pretty neat looking wood. Bought a new 462 with 25" bar. 3 tanks through it so far and it feels great going from a 50cc. And a picture of my cords from this year around mid summer. Well, lucky scrounging.
I would expect yew to burn more like cedar. I might have some juniper to try. Some sections are big enough to need to be split. They were about 55 years old. Planted 1964/65.
I discovered it by accident, took down a 12-14” diameter standing dead, assumed since it was a conifer it’s shoulder wood. I split and stacked, let it dry a few years and when I got around to burning it, it burned so hot and long, I literally had to open windows, the house got so hot. My own fault, when wood is dry and still that dense and heavy (there’s your sign) It’s great firewood, downside is that the smoke is supposedly toxic, probably shouldn’t cook s’mores over it.
damm, I've thrown a lot out. There are some on the property across the street where there used to be a house many moons ago that are now as big as a house, good 14-16 inch trunks. Dunno how (relatively) toxic they can be, deer seem to enjoy them.
personally ive heard of it and seen it but never burned im srry i aint much help i know a grand parent of mine had 1 that was suppose to be used as a bush but turned into a 20 ft tall tree
