Mini scrounge today. Can you name the genus? species? I never knew this stuff had good BTU’s! I’ve chipped and trashed so much of this wood over my career. I have cut down some big ones and thought it was only good for making bowls. Needed this forum resource 25yrs ago. Who’s going to claim the hump day ID crown first? I left work at 12, it’s been a rough week.
Close enough, opaca is a parent. This naturally occurring hybrid was discovered growing in the wild in Florida in 1924. Going to need something tougher next time.
This is a big Black Oak in my front yard. Black Oaks are the ones with the biggest leaves and the bark is blackish. Pretty big acorns too. In the background is 30’ Poplar log. Was going to let it rot until y’all lerned me it’s ok early season firewood.
I don’t know how it got started but lots of folks don’t like tulip poplar for firewood. I use it and it works well. Dries pretty quick which is remarkable because it loses so much weight when drying.
Along my driveway is a decent size So. Red Oak that’s dead. I already have enough log piles to do, so this may be a spring project. Bark is similar to Black Oak. I identified it from the leaves when it was still alive.
