Wood ID please, southern Minnesota

Bark reminds me of chestnut oak but the wood doesnt. Wood looks like some sort of softwood maybe?

I thought chestnut oak at first also from the bark.
Also looks like sassafras bark., but the branch going through to the center looks like a pine

 

Is it in the woods? Minnesota is outside the native range of Chestnut Oak.
I agree the bark is similar and wood is pretty like chestnut oak.

 

There are a lot of oaks around here, no distinctive smell, almost the same smell as white ash

 

Douglas Fir wood encased within Sassafras bark, parent tree was a Chestnut Oak that had an affair with an unknown deciduous conifer mutant who's seeds were dropped during the Lewis and Clark expedition and carried north via the underground railroad. Final guess. I think I'm done trying to I.D. these trees 1,000 miles away from me

 

Don’t beat me up. Could it be a punky black oak? I’ve seen huge growth rings on a black oak.

 

I have no clue what it is, I grabbed about 6 rounds at the burn site. While I was cutting a guy walked up and tapped my better half on the shoulder and told her I just dropped off a load of white ash.

 

Bark is wrong for Black Oak, but maybe Minnesota wind chill does something funky to it.
Some Oaks are hard to distinguish. I’ve been told they are promiscuous, but I’m not a believer. Sometimes you gotta open up the Dirr book and check the acerns.

I’ve cut cottonwood before and it had a bad smell. This has a pleasant smell, it’s really close to ash. Anyone ever cut any white swamp oak? The pictures I’m seeing somewhat resemble that.

 

looks some some variety of Pine, possibly Pitch?

 

Persimmon?

 

I think I will set this aside for the fire pit.
