I have seen a few trees here in VA that I can't figure out.

They are in the National Park at Appomattox

The first one looks like white ash, which is the first live one I've seen in years. The second looks to shag bark hickory. I can't see the leaves well enough to be sure.

That's my story and I'm stickin' ta hit! Well, fer now anyhow!

I thought the swc8 might be shagbark, I've only seen a few, but the leaves were pretty big. One of the guides wasn't sure either.

I’d have to see a closer look at the leaves on the second. The picture looks like a blackgum, but that’s not a blackgum trunk or root flare.

I agree the first pic is of Ash. The bark and leaves look correct. The other tree is not a Shagbark in my opinion. The leaves look too rounded, they don't appear to have leaflets of 5, and the bark isn't quite right.

Soley based on online images, Redbud matches pretty closely.

Like others have said, ash on the first. Not sure what the 2nd is, but I dont think its shag, and dont think it's redbud. I've never seen a redbud get over volleyball-ish size at the base (and that's a biggun), and never a "grown tree" form, always a understory type, and leaves arent right. Sally is here doing her thing, but if I get a chance I'll get pics of redbud for comparison.

The second tree looks more like shag higher up. Its an old tree which may make a difference.

I did some more looking around and think tree 2 is in the hickory family more like red hickory or maybe shellbark hickory rather than shag.

Makes me wanna say a large shellbark because of the smaller leaves.

The huge base and semi shaggy bark for the second tree reminds me of an older American elm. I don’t see the teeth and asymmetric base on the leaves though.

I looked at a list of trees in the Appomattox Courhouse Park. There are a ton BTW. I then analyzed the ones I thought could be what you showed us with the second tree. My best guess based on the bark and leaves is Red Mulberry.

It has big leaves. Just might be mulberry, didn't see any hickory nuts around.
