Something hand splitters will appreciate. Splitting black locust this afternoon. Knot from a limb sticking out. Nothing out of the ordinary. I split and it opens enough for me to pry apart with my hands...or so i thought. Pulled and pulled it wouldnt come apart. I'm like WTH! Looked at why and got a good chuckle. Knot end too big too pull out! Broke up the monotony of splitting!
ooooouuuuucccchhhhh i had a piece of red oak like that the other night i beat the crud out of it with my 8lb and wedge for like 20 min then kinda got ticked off and put my chainsaw to it
I hand split but after 10 minutes or so one one piece it gets set aside for the chainsaw. Chainsaw doesn’t mind those knots at all!
Log split in one swing, but was "locked" together by the knot. Trust me i know a toughie when i see i it and usually wont even try. It gets noodled.
Seems the older you get the more knotty the wood gets! Another factor which turned me to machine splitting. But nice straight grained ash, oak or maple can be quicker split with an X27 and a tire. But even that slows as you approach 70.

Reminds me of splitting pine Brad. I always seem to get a lot of those knots in pine. In fact, tossed one in the firepit last night.
