I know this is pretty generic but here goes: I am looking to move to a 2nd amendment friendly state that is not in the south (read: hotter than the hinges of hell). So, Vermont seems to be the obvious choice but Cow Hampshire and Maine also have their attractions. Looking for a place with reasonable cost of living and cost of land as I would like to have some acreage just to keep the neighbors a bit distant though not looking to live in the furthest corners of society either. Something somewhat remote but still accessible to the modern commodities such as shopping, a Homely Despot and so forth w/in an hour's drive.

Preferably someplace that does not get too hot (over 80F) or at least a place that does not STAY too hot. Not really concerned about winter or snowfall.

It would be great to find a place somewhat remote while still being in reasonable distance of life in modern times (read: not the northern edges of northern New England) while still being away from liberal city- centers.

Especially looking for affordable prices on both real estate as well as annual taxes.

Also looking at northern / central / western states: I found Missoula, MT to be wonderful and Couer d'Alene quite nice in a short visit. Being an eastern boy these places would be quite the culture change but that might be OK also provided the benefits and cost of property and cost of living are reasonable.

So, what say thee Firewood Hoarder folk located in those areas?

Any reasonable response greatly appreciate. Any rational, honest response appreciated even more. :)

Brian (who is shriveling in this barren, insane idiocy that is southern New England)

One thing to remember, southern Maine,NH, and VT us locals away from there call northern Massachusetts because that is what it is for the most part. And the Home Depot within an hour, an hour drive can be 80 miles here. My wife’s town HD is that far to the closest one. We don’t measure time to drive somewhere the same. Where you are from it might be 20 miles but takes an hour. You need to pick an area and go check it out and see if it’s what you are looking for. Prices vary. The town we live in is Name your price. Not far away it’s give me anything you can pay.

Although I do love our small corner of Western NY.. It would not meet your 2nd Amendment criteria, and property taxes are one of the nation's highest.

Sometimes I wonder why I'm still here..

I honestly do appreciate that! Not sure I want to go that far north though; looking for sub- sub- sub- urbia, not the dark side of the moon :)

New Hampshire is where I want to retire to. Their license plates say it all. More Libertarian than Vermont or Maine. No sales tax but I hear property taxes can be steep. The system will get it from you one way or another wherever you go though.

I concur. You're not that far away from "civilization" for my tastes. I'd actually prefer how you have it.

You mentioned Couer D'Alene, so i will jump on that. Cost of living in the Inland Northwest is pretty decent, and you can choose between WA, ID, and MT based on your other criteria. I cannot speak on the 2nd ammendment aspect, but I suspect that ID and MT are more free in that regard than WA. I live in Eastern WA, and love it here.

Look a little North of CDA, Northern Idaho (Sandpoint for example) is pretty nice, but growing fast with an influx from CA. In WA, I would maybe look in Pend Oreille or Stevens counties, they are a little "out there," but close enough to Spokane.

If you were to choose WA, just know that Seattle and its politics are the 800lb gorilla here. The East is different, but the gorilla is still there calling a ot of the shots.

Washington is huge. Lots of rural areas on the west side. We are actually pretty free as far as 2nd amendment stuff. You’ll want to avoid a few particular counties and the rest of us are quite rural. No income tax.

Yes, you are most certainly correct. No offense intended to those in the West, I'd be happy living in most of Washington. It is a beautiful and varied state.

Hey, Well Seasoned - you be further up north in NH - anything to add to the thread?

As far as property taxes go, yes, they are more than those states with income and sales taxes, but once you account for that, usually you are better off (it just comes in 2 payments instead of paying every purchase and pay check). We don't tax SS either.

I came from Kansas and have thought about moving closer to the folks (they are in their mid-late 80's), but I look at the 6-8% sales tax (even on cars, which would add about what I pay in property taxes per year to the price), and income taxes at another 5-10%, and I am super good here.
