Got the Junior model Supersplit yesterday what a beast! So, the bearing 064C, the one that needs lubrication, what type of bearing is that? I ask because the manual says all bearings (except for the flywheel) are sealed. I will lubricate it as directed, but if it's a sealed bearing why lubricate? Thanks
There is no junior model. The J model doesn’t stand for junior. They are all the same size physically. Not sure why J, but it’s just the original. You shouldn’t need to lubricate the bearing itself, but you do need to lubricate the beam that the bearing rides on top of. I use a spray on gel grease like you’d use on a motorcycle roller chain. Seems to last longer and clings better than a cheaper product like WD40. The bearing is really a yoke cam follower. If it develops a flat spot it won’t return the rack well. They are not expensive or hard to replace. I think the last time I ordered them I bought 3 Japanese made ones for 20 dollars or so. The key is to give the cam follower a smooth surface to glide over. That means frequently scraping the top of the beam with a putty knife and keeping it lubed.
If it is a newer unit, the bolt that holds that bearing in place should be drilled so you can grease the bearing with grease gun using a needle tip.
It is greaseable unlike what others have posted here. The bolt is thru drilled and cross drilled like sevensandeights said.
If the newer Super splits have a grease-able bearing its a newer "upgrade" by SS. Older units did not have a grease-able bearing, it was a common complaint on numerous forums. My mistake. So in addition to my other advice which still holds true, I agree that the bearing if grease-abale should be greased.
My J model was bought new in 2011. I know they made changes in 2012 area. Things like flywheel weights, engine options, etc. Mine doesn’t have a sealed bearing or a through drilled bolt holding the cam follower to accept grease. Sevenandeights stated “newer” units have a through drilled bolt. Mine does not. If your 19 year old machine has that feature then either they used to do it and stopped and restarted or your drilled bolt was not from the factory that way.
