I think the answer is obvious......get both!!! A long one for unloading trucks and trailers, and a short one for picking rounds up to the splitter.
For sure a pickeroon is one handy tool. Here are a couple pictures of rolling some big rounds up to the splitter. In these type situation the can work better than a canthook. I like a 36" with a wood handle. Now for pulling longer logs or for picking up smaller logd, a good timber tong is worth its weight in gold!

Yes, it turned out to be not so good. I remember I was working with Kenis at the splitter. We were going like a house afire and having a ball. Then it was just one block I put in the conveyor and it felt like someone shot me. Somebody else had to relieve me and then later, I started wondering where eatonpcat was... Someone said something like he gave the finger to someone or something like that. All in all it was a good day and we're still here.

So I ordered a 28" Fiskers. I have an X- 27 and have been happy with it's quality so I figured go with what ya know. A couple of folks ask what I was going to use the hookaroon for; so maybe this picture will answer the question!
For rounds like that you want a shorter handled version. Like Dennis said, the smaller rounds could be easily picked up with tongs
I never bought one, Fashioned a broken Fiskars X27 handle into one. Use a carriage bolt ground to a point. Mostly used to unload rounds/splits out of truck. Forgot it the other day and was lost without it.
Does that "stick" well? I first made mine with a piece of 1/4" plate...it was too light...you really had to wind up and take a whack at the log to get it in far enough to stay put. Cut it off and made one from some 1/2" plate...more better! Thought about welding a small chunk of 1" plate on the back side of the pipe coupler for additional weight...doesn't seem to need it though, but I'll use it for a while before I make my final decision on that...could always just tack it on for a trial run I suppose...
I have a Fiskars X27 that looks just like that one, minus the modification. I guess I have will something to do next time it rains.
It doesnt. It is light too. I ground it conical shaped and shouldve gone flat grind on both sides. Ive replaced the bolt once as it got bent and snapped when i bent it back. Works okay stabbing bark on rounds/splits for unloading. Never really tried it as a "picker upper"
