Not to sound like a wise guy but what ya gonna do with it? Some like long ones to help unload splits and rounds from their pickups, some like short for picking wood off the ground without bending over... Mine is about 35 inches over all. Sometimes it's too short and sometimes it's too long, but most of the time it's OK. It's tough to reach the last row of wood in a pickup without stretching, so longer would be nice... I can always choke up on it if it's too long. The tip is kind of at a weird angle too but I can fix that with a grinder. I'd like to have the longer 48" Logrite Hookaroon to go with what I have now. I have a couple of scrap ax heads, I suppose I could make my own
Never had one, but it looks like something that could make my life easier for pulling rounds to the splitter. Short and long. Thanks for tip! I’ve always used a 3’ cant hook for rolling logs and moving big chunks around.
I have a mountain of rounds piled up that need to be split soon. It will be used to help move the larger rounds into place for splitting.
I think it really depends on how tall you are and how you plan to use it. I have a 36” logrite and it’s perfect for me but I’m 6’1” I couldn’t use one of the Fiskars to drag logs, they are too short. The difference a hookaroon makes to drag a log is unbelievable, so much easier. Length of your pickup bed or trailer also needs to be taken into consideration, I have an 8’ bed and like the longer one. But like ErikR said depends on what you want to use it for. I want a short one for the splitting process. For scrounging a long one is nice. Also makes for a great walking stick.
I've got s short box Tacoma and I'm only 5'11" so I think probably a 28" would work for me. I cut 5 loads of logs I got from Chipdrop. Now I have a mountain of rounds to split. I just figured this would be the perfect tool to make the work easier.
That's what I just did...had an old broken 36" sledge hammer handle laying here...2" shorter now due to cutting off where it broke...shaved it down until I could screw a 1" pipe coupling on, shaped a scrap piece of 1/2" plate into a head, little weld, bam, hookeroon! I think I'll make a second one so I can carry two rounds to the truck at once...
Another vote for the Fiskars, I have had mine since my birthday in Jan. I love it especially for pulling rounds from the bed.
I think there’s a lot of personal preference involved, not to mention the uses. I made my first out of an 16” hatchet. Love the utility of it. Just use it for grabbing small to medium rounds off the ground and tossing them on the splitter. Works great and saves the back but I felt it was too short. Made another out of an axe head and steel pipe for a handle. Never measured it, I cut it long, guesstimate 30”. I hate it. Too heavy and too long,,,,,,for me. Plus I changed the head design which I don’t like either. So while the original is a tad short for my purposes it still is the one I use. Someday I’ll make another.
I have a Hookaroon I use when splitting BUT Best tool for me, with reach for pickup truck is a cultivator
I had always used a cant hook until I got a hookaroon for Christmas. I use it more the the cant hook now. All depends on what is needing to be done.
