So as many of you know, I cut and split all summer long no matter the weather. I hear lots of guys say no way not for them. I have to tell ya the truth. In June, the heat sucks. In July, it’s not generally much better. But here it is the end of August and when I get home my wife is taking the trash out. She looks at me and says, “I don’t know how you work in this heat.” I simply replied, “I’m conditioned.” I then follow up by saying, “it’s not even that hot today.” I go inside and take a look at my phone....sure enough it’s another hot one but there was a nice breeze. As with most things, you do it long enough and you just get used to it.
Absolutely!!! There are a lot of people in poor physical shape that tying a shoe is a big ordeal. A lot of diseases and chronic conditions are result of being in poor shape/sedentary lifestyles and poor diets for extended periods of time, and many could be avoided. I've noticed throughout the years, a lot of the people who complain about their health, eat like crap, don't exercise, sit down all day and don't hardly move, smoke like a chimney, etc, etc. Whens the last time a physically active person like a farmer complained about their health? Humans are actually designed to do long endurance events, compared to say a gorilla or a lion or other wild animal who is much more fast twitch muscle fiber dominant, but lacks the endurance piece.
I do tree work all day, so when it gets hot I don’t want to mess with firewood when I get home. I may do some stacking and covering, but in July and August my saws and splitter are quiet.
If I didn’t do firewood like I do, my liver would be in sad shape and I would probably weigh 50 pounds more than I do!
My firewood hoarding keeps me from falling back on old habits. Although my behavior is the same, I just switched addictions
My first job was a mechanic in a china factory and I was "conditioned" so much that I would get goose bumps at anything below 80°
Unfortunately they are just careless. But it ain’t easy finding guys that can drive two hours in both directions to jackhammer for a 8+ hour shift with cars careening past you at 80 mph. I give them some credit for that I certainly wouldn’t want to do it.
Mom used to say that to me all the time!! I did bump, literally just bump a 3 or 4 pallet high stack of lamps that crashed into bits. Took a lot of ribbing until the main "ribber" knocked a 4-6" valve off the bottom of a 20ish thousand gallon tank of mud and basically shut the casting department down.
At 67 I'm quite happy with my physical condition and my health. I bicycle 150 miles a week, walk at least 3 miles a day and kayak uncounted miles, no matter the weather. This summer I hiked to the top of Mt. Marcy, New York's highest peak, and back in one day. It was an 18 mile round trip with 3500+ feet of climbing. The next day we did another 12 mile hike. I could process wood in the summer, and on rare occasions I have, but I choose not to, there's just too many bicycle trips, hikes and streams to kayak and so little time left to enjoy them. However I salute you perseverance and strength.
I plead the Fifth.. Strange.. now I want a shot of Beam But.. I can still tie my boots My job is sedentary, and my off-work time has become so as well. I'm not after a firewoodhoarder award.. just heating my house and trying to enjoy the time I've got. I've gotten sick of running the overtime treadmill years ago.. and I'm not trying to chase down any gazelles. I may have more than I deserve.. but I've worked for everything that I've got.
