So I have a new 24ft yurt put up in western NY and am in the market for a new wood stove. I’m really interested in the hybrid wood stoves due to the long burn times and and the ability to run it low. I just reserved a Woodstock soapstone absolute steel hybrid stove and I’m second guessing my choice. I’m worried it might be to big for my space and cook me out. Also, the customer rep from Woodstock says I might not be able to boil water on this stove. Does anyone have experience with this stove? Or, would anyone have experience with stove BTUs and burn times for a 24’ yurt? Also, can you cook on hybrid (cat) stoves? My yurt has basically no r value for insulation but has a reflectix type insulation for radiant heat. TIA

I’ve burned the AS for a winter, and I grew up cooking with wood heat. I think the AS will be fine as your heater for the yurt. For cooking in the cold weather it will be fine, too, but it will be less than ideal for cooking the rest of the year. We always run with a large stainless steel tea pot on the stove - with the Woodstock stoves we don’t ever have to shift to a cooler spot on the stovetop to slow a boil of water. I do some soups/stews on the stovetop and do shift around for a slower simmer.

Yeah, what Flamestead said about cooking- the IS top just does not get all that hot unless really pushing the stove. And by that I mean the stove is putting out so much heat we cannot stand next to it. I also have a large SS pot on top for humidity and most of the time, it does not even put of visible steam. I doubt this is the product of a hybrid stove but it is how the Ideal Steel specifically runs. You might have better luck with a different hybrid stove regarding cooking.

Best of luck with your search!
