In the wooded section nearest my house where we sometimes like to relax was getting overgrown. Mostly maple saplings around 3'-6' tall. We cut most of it away, pruned many trees of lower branches. I pulled down a red oak snag from Sandy, cut that up and it went into the processing area. Below are pics of what was bucked, where the junk was taken, and general pictures of the area.
I need to learn to take better pictures. Should have taken before and after shots. Oh well..... use your imagination. The one shot is the weird breed of fern we have. Alittle more light gets through now since I pruned a lot of trees. You can see boulders clearly now.
Bet that feels awesome to get that cleared out... It's nuts how fast areas like that grow over isn't it? Really good to see you're able to go at it WS after your ATV adventure about a month ago... ...
Thx guys, was a good day. My leg feels 100%, still got to make sure I don't nail it. Below are some better pictures. After I took them, wife and I went for a ride to do some trail maintenance. We ended up making a side trail down a hill and back up a different section. The area was boulder free, and only needed to cut back a few branches. I found a massive tree at the bottom, will post a picture tomorrow.
Yea, its been overloaded one too many times. A good tub trailer purchase is in the future. Waiting for a sale. Had it loaded with a few small boulders earlier.
Between my wife and I, 40 acres Old copper mining area/ glacier area, boulders from basketballs to small buses. Main trees are oaks, maples, hickories, poplar, ash, and sassafrass. Old RR bed just got approved for rails to trails which is a good and bad thing. This will allow hikers, bikers, cc skiing, and horseback riding. This section butts up against the northeastern corner of the property, and continues on while our property turns SE meeting the neighbors property. There is "common ground" shared with the neighbors, all woods where the boulders begin to get huge. Main uses are hunting and firewood. I maintain the trails with the southernmost neighbor. Part of clearing today was to build up a natural fence of tree tops to keep people from wandering off the trail (approved, but hasn't broke ground yet).
Great to have quiet woods to walk around in. You got it looking darn good. Now you can spend some time enjoying it
At least I'm not the only one with trailer bearings that have run past their useful life I attempted to repack mine and a couple pieces of the race fell out it's on the "list"
The locals say that the boulders keep a lot of the tree up during strong winds. The roots grow under the boulders.
WS, I agree the rails to trails can be a good thing but as too many have found out, it can also be bad. People don't respect other's land but worse yet is the thieves. I get asked quite often how many of the trails I ride on. Ha! I've rode on one for about 1/4 mile and that is just because it is a shortcut over a river when I go that way. Other than that, I have no use for them.
