On one hand, I do feel its invading personal privacy. However, you are being paid to work X amount of hours. Companies can't keep an eye on you like they can in a real office. Shouldn't be a big deal to all the stay at home heroes who claim to work "more than I ever worked". Time to prove it then. OT baby!!!
There's been software to log your computer up and down time as well. There's really nothing new to see here except to document what an awful lot of people already know. I really doubt it is "more" surveillance, just a new venue, but it sure makes for a good headline for fear-mongering and adclicks. When you add security means into the mix some people are on a much shorter leash at home.
Although working from home is not new, I think the amount of people who are now working from home or working remotely is at an all time high. That is why this surveillance type software is becoming so popular. So companies can track employees hours, work, productivity, etc. I've never worked anywhere where they track your key strokes, or take a picture to see if your at your desk every ten minutes. So I'd say that's pretty new. Recent events are changing how workplaces will operate in the future.
Working from home didn't have a lot of success when a higher percentage of homes only had dialup speeds. Which was only ten years ago. I was setting up Skype on people's laptops to communicate with old folks back home in the Acores and what-not and the video over dialup was excrutiatingly frustrating for everyone involved.
I work directly with animals so my work from home capacity is limited. I can tell you that I am a lot more productive at work with all of the work from home people at home.
I would think the way it would go down is your employer would have to notify you of the new requirements as far as surveillance goes. You would then be "asked" to sign a form of consent. If you refused, i would think they could demand you work from the actual office or could start the termination process. I agree, its only just begun. Schools are already implementing this sort of stuff to ensure participation with kids. If anyone thinks its out of reality, or against their rights, you better re-read your terms of employment.
Things like this have been used for quite some time. For example, take all forms of trucking. One that is probably familiar to all is UPS. The company knows where the trucks are when they start their runs. They van tell you where trucks are and when the reach stops. I laugh as it has happened more than once that a UPS truck stopped at the road and walked or run to the house (100 yards). The reason was the package was guaranteed to be delivered on a certain day by a certain time. In order to stop the truck within that time limit, they had to stop rather than drive the extra 100 yards. I don't remember for sure of the driver was fined or not but think that does happen. Pretty much all otr trucks have little computers like that. Some just show mileage but most tell when, where and what speed. It happens a lot; like it or not.
I could of used this sign at my previous employer as the technician/employee restroom always seem to have crap streaks on the seat . Even had a customer that came into the store that must of crapped himself. He left his underwear on the stall floor and a mess on everything in there.
We are all being watched in ways the majority of the population doesn't even understand and frighteningly enough doesn't seem to care. Most of us keep the device attached to our hips/back pocket.
