Not really. Its a total different class of saw. It'd be like comparing a fancy half ton to a plain jane one ton.

A comparable class saw, a Makita 7900 Power head can be bought for $819.

Makita EA7900PRZ 78.5cc Professional Gas Chain Saw - Power Head Only

    Add $60 for the B&C. $819+$60=$879

    How is $879 and $1299 the same??? That's about a 32% increase

Dont get me wrong, I'm not saying no one should buy it, but its brand new unproven technology for significantly more than older, proven technology. Can the average chainsaw owner even work on this saw?

I think the apples to apples is the 572xp.
    Weighs less than the 500i
Has nearly 10% more power than 500i
And is $300 less than the 500i

I think the cutoff saw version is 10% less power than the 572. The chainsaw version is about 1 full hp more than the 572xp. Still overpriced though.

your right, on published oem data. I had grabbed the cut saw info. The saw is higher, 6.8 vs 5.8, and 7 cc’s larger, at 79cc.

Having said that, I just saw dyno comparison and the 572xp, stock, was actually pulling 7.1 and 500i was less. Pretty much as published at 6.8.

results are on a dyno thread on another forum.

572xp is the stronger saw over rpm range and it’s still $300 less

Agree, Stihl saws and OEM parts are expensive.

Yes, but power to weight ratio... I'd also say the 500i isn't unproven at this point. You know, Germans.

I guess. A 154 lb weightlifter May have better lb for lb strength than Brian Shaw, but he’s never winning Worlds Strongest Man. There’s a lot of things a395 can do that a 50o will not. Like milling big wood, running a buried 42” bar consistently, etc. No replacement for displacement

When I first wanted a 661c I was put off by the amount of bugs still being worked out so I patiently waited until the issues subsided. I'm going sit back and observe on fuel injection for now.

As someone that has owned both models for over a year, the 500i is a world of a better saw in my mind. BTW, 572xp is almost a pound heavier than a 500i.

I’ve had my 500i for over a year, it’s been flawless.

I don’t know about y’all, but I may have watched all the YouTube vids on the 500 and the opinion that stood out the most was from a European logger who raved about the throttle response and handling. I’ve been pumped about this since I first heard about it, but gave up on waiting and got the 462.

I still smile when I run my 2009 7900 that was $650 brand new. Doubt this saw will do much that the 7900 won’t

I’ve owned over 10 7900’s over the years and still have one. They are light and powerful, but this 500i is just a better saw all around. Biggest complaint with a 7900 I’ve ever had is the crappy zama carb, it’s not well mannered. A Walbro would be so much better.

Your point about price definitely holds merit though. You could buy a smaller saw and a Makita variant of a 7910 for the price of a 500i. My dealer sold me a 572xp for cost, so my 500i was $500 more than the 572xp. That’s a big cost savings.

    I defer to you AJtree88 , I haven’t run both.

    Do you think it’s a $300 difference?
