I was thinking birch, maybe yellow or black? Smells like root beer when split. Pretty heavy and splits easy.
Bark looks like black birch. Correct smell. Splits look a little different tho. Could just be that particular tree in your particular area. Good stuff.
The unsplit round is black birch. Been a while since ive split any and a rare scrounge for me so dont remember what the inside looks like. Great smelling stuff. PU full of birch rounds from a recent score. Black and yellow birch. Yellow (far right) has the flakier bark.
Agree with black birch. Your area is loaded with that stuff. I've cut acres of saplings on a hunting camps property. They want the nut trees to thrive. I get more of a wintergreen smell then root beer.
i think im gonna have be x4 of black birch ...... and from the pics of yellow birch ive seen they can sometimes look like a cross between blacj and silver birch with it bein a little closer to black birch when it starts to become mature
