First off a big "THANK YOU" to FHC members and fellow Connecticut hoarders jo191145 and Eric Schamell for helping me with my locust mania ...you guys are the best! This score was an indirect result of the tropical storm last week. Had i not picked up the job next door it never wouldve happened. I was working the job (storm damage) when a crew shows up next door with chain saws to cut up a bigger fallen limb. I happen to look and see black locust. I run over foaming at the mouth asking what they are doing with it. "were going to chip it" in broken English. "Can i have it"? i ask. The homeowner chimes in saying he is giving it to his sister for their firepit. I pressed the issue and he gave in. Tossed it over the fence and into my truck it went. Guy mustve thought i was some firewood nut or something! 4-5 lengths of 6" wood. They were coming back to fell the leaner. I lined up the score. They cut it yesterday and i was there today like flies on, well you know what! I was able to back right up to it and buck to my length. NOTE: i did not fell tree. All the wood was on the ground. He let me take the rounds they stacked on his pile and some older locust in the mix. Random lengths of course. 90% locust 10% sugar maple. Cant get enough of this locust mania!
Good going Brad. I may have to take a ride on the backroads in Glastonbury and start scoping out the river situation A couple of cool days here and I can feel the itch return LMAO. There are worse habits.
Brad I’m not so sure I’m helping you any; I think we’re all more or less cosigning each other’s BS! Hahaha Happy to hear we both got our weekend Locust fix! Must be something in the air around here lately... oh yeah, a Tropical Storm! With any luck we’ll have a REAL winter this year with a Nor’easter that’ll bring down some more premium firewood.
It sits on my bench downstairs. Took the bent handle and the broken brake lever off. The snapped end was on the clutch side so i havent dismantled that part yet. Dont have the lever and am undecided if keeping it or not. Slight variation in gaps but seems okay. My unofficial diagnosis. The 361 has filled the void nicely. Bucked some 23" sugar maple with it this afternoon. 28" bar.
So true. Wood, chainsaws, tractors. We know how to spend other people’s money shagbark hickory,,,,,,, Fresh storm knock down,,,,two trees. Right near the driveway. Shag Syndrome is real thing Brad. Heading out after lunch, rain or shine. Temps are down, ready to roll again. FB marketplace is awesome Hahahaha
...but you're "Locust Joe"? Im confused. With all the room you have and that rig id have your yard looking like jrider's operation! Wanna see pics Joe or it didnt happen! Go get that WOOD! It is nice and cool. Splitting some sugar maple and that truckload of locust. Cutting later in Wallingford.
Shag is rare on my property. Perhaps now that one tree is in the stacks it’s nonexistent. Who am I to argue with the syndrome? LOL I did drop half a pine tree in my sisters yard today and cleaned up a cherry. That should buy me a little wood scrounging grace with the mom and sis. Not much tho.
Dont fight it Joe, dont fight it. Just go with. Resistance is futile! Will you keep wood types together or dump at random at your place? Showering here.
Raining pretty good here. Oh well, I’m gonna get wet. Once I make up my mind there’s no turning back. I’d like to keep at least the hickory’s and locust separated. Doing my best to keep the fast seasoning stuff separate from the oak. Plans always get disrupted when these last minute scores come in.
Split all the rounds this morning. Still have the others to buck then split. Probably half cord for the score! Poor pic taken with flip phone and at dusk.
