“I pulled a bunch of logs out of the woods from the logging they did on our property over the winter. My wood racks are completely full! Take all the wood you need, I saw some open spots in your stacks. It’s all Beech, Maple and Oak.”

I cut a lot today and my wife helped move the rounds back to our property. I saw my neighbor and he showed me two more spots off their driveway where I can cut more. He also offered me whatever is left back in the woods this fall when the access road dries up. This is a big score!

That should set you up for a couple of winters! Is this up in VT?

Yep! Right 'next door' to us in VT. And by next door, up the curvy driveway about a 1/4 mile. Really good people. If you look closely at the pic of the rounds and the saw, you can see the green roof of our shed in the background.

There's a really big maple trunk that must have gotten away from the loggers when they were putting stuff on the deck. It rolled off my neighbors' property and about 10' from the line. He said I could cut that up and just rolled over the stone wall. LOL.

I've had access to Beech before, but it was always from a dead tree that had fallen and the wood was a little punky; certainly burnable though. The stuff I got yesterday was from a healthy tree. It was heavier than the Oak! Dense stuff for sure.

I've been eyeing electric splitters (Harbor Freight or Homelite). Think it's time to pull the trigger and start splitting.

Don't be surprised at how heavy that beech will still be, after proper seasoning.

Unfortunately, no. However, it has a grayish bark with a similar look to a white birch; peels a bit on it's own. May be a Yellow Birch. I do know there are a few growing around the woods there.
