Icut four monsters with thorns like that a few years back.......matter of fact I'm going to be burning that this winter (had two pieces of it in the stove overnight as a matter of fact!). I have four more to do on that same farm whenever I get time. Some of those thorns are 8" long and in giant clusters, I can tell you they hurt like hell when they go into your legs!!
Oh yah... They suck... Them damm things have caused more flat tires and limps than I can count.. They're a weed around here... Blujacket? I knew there was a thornless cultivar, but just didn't know they were so popular as yard trees over there!!! Do they shed pods like the thorned ones do?
No difference between the wild thorny ones & the thornless cultivars.Wood is same color,density,strength,burning quality etc.Bark is same,both have the pods too. Lots were planted starting in early-mid '50's over parts of the Midwest & eastern US.Biggest ones I seen or cut were pretty close to 60 years old now. Those thorns are wicked - will go through tractor tires & I've run a couple in my boot years ago,hurts like Hell & you better watch for infection afterwards.
