My 460 suffered a blunt impact trauma yesterday. Bar got bent but saw still worked fine. I later was using and chain brake handle snapped. Is this an easy fix?

They aren't too bad. I use a modified screwdriver to get the spring on the post. look at a spring tool for drum brakes. I will get a picture after a bit.

I swapped out a chain brake on a 441. Wasn’t to difficult once I figured out how the mechanism worked. I’m by far a mechanic of any kind. If I can do it I’m sure you can. I’d bet there are plenty of videos on you tube. Good luck!

EDIT: when i said bar i meant handle not the guide bar. I was felling a 20' spar and had to do some extra cutting after pounding two steel wedges in all the way. Tree lets go while cutting and saw went with tree while i beat feet the other.

Thanks DH. I need a big saw for Thursday and dont have time to fix before then. Could use the 261 but 20" plus sugar maple. Buying a real nice very lightly used 361 Wednesday.
Stihl CAD :saw: at its finest.

Now I'm confused, is it the handle bar or the brake flag?

Handle bar bent and brake still worked after incident. Bucked several rounds after and went to disengage the brake and the brake lever plastic snapped close to the housing.

Sorry to hear about the damage, buZZsaw BRAD . Never good. Glad you weren't collateral damage.

They're pretty easy to change. I don't have a hook tool to get the spring back on so I use some strong cord tied in a loop with a large screwdriver as a T handle to stretch the spring. A hook would be much easier...

Good luck with the 361! I’m sure the 261 could handle 20+ sugar maple no problem, but another saw is always good! I’ve considered a 360/361/362 Just to run a 20” bar, but haven’t found the right deal yet. Let me know how it fits in your line up. And of course post pics!

361 is the king of Stihl 60 cc saws. Very impressive in stock form.

    Easy to fix, yep.
Look for used OEM handle and brake flag. AM handles are prone to bending. AM brake flags are ok for 1122 and 1125 series, but they can have issues.

    The brake flag removal-
Take off the long recoil mount screw on the flywheel side. I usually take the recoil off and clean things out. Take off the bar/chain and remove the m4 screws that hold the plastic brake/dust cover. There’s a two-piece dust cover system... don’t lose the smaller piece.
The brake spring can be removed with a good set of pliers. Don’t jam anything in the coils. Remove the spring (probably under tension) and you’ll see how the mechanism works. There’s two small e-clips. Don’t lose em lol. The flag is held on with an integral pin from the case and one of the two clips. Take a pic of the orientation so you put it back correctly with a new flag.

I take the clutch drum off, too. Clean everything back there and inspect the brake band.

I’ve never heard of a case of CAD getting so out of hand so rapidly, ( except my own).
The way I figure it, your saw count has almost tripled since we joined up here. Mine too!:handshake:

I had three. 460, 290 and Husky 334. Bought 028, 170 and 194T in a months time back in April. Sold the 290 in June. The 361 has been in the plans since April. With the 460 down my biggest is only 52cc so neccessity dictated it. I have a tree job on Thursday/Friday. Big sugar maple from the recent storm.
EDIT: completely forgot the little 020 rear handle i bought off FBM last week. May keep. may flip
