You guys be careful cutting those downed trees that might have some tension on them. A guy over on AS posted that he was cutting storm damage and a branch flew up and knocked his saw into his leg. Luckily his chaps stopped the saw immediately.
Got power back at 10 last night. Saw on the news this morning there’s still 1 million plus without power in Jersey
A tornado briefly touched down 20 minutes from me. Took a roof off a daycare, only minor injuries. In my town, we had exactly five inches of rain in about 12 hours. I was "trapped" at home and the kids were at daycare. I walked through the woods and few peoples backyards with car seats. My dad picked my up on the other side of the flooded road. We picked up the kids and I made the 1/8" mile walk back through the woods carrying kids and backpacks. My arms were more tired from that than any day of sawing. Today, the roads look like it never happened.
My entire town is without power. And my generator is with the in-laws up in Terryville as they need it more than I do. I picked up a 5 gallon bucket's worth of walnuts in my yard that blew off my neighbors black walnut tree... but no big branches. Which is a shame, as I wanted to play with the saw a little. Unfortunately no time or energy to go hunting for a blow-down score around town. Please go attack some trees on my behalf everybody!
Right you are, RED oak on my wood pile. When I was assessing the damage last night, everything was mangled together and I misidentified the big one. As I was cutting it up today I noticed the leaves were definitely red oak. Either way, I gained a white, red, and chestnut oak from this debacle!
Here is the hinge from the limb that hit the ground. Imagine the force required to rip green wood like that. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Still no power here. 36 hours and counting. My wife used the Nat Grid app and they said my account should expect to see power at 12pm on 8/7. So tomorrow at noon I guess. I wont hold my breath. Looks by the time its done itll be 3 full days without power.
We went four days in a March 2018 blizzard. No TV/internet for 8 days. We are one of five house on a line that comes off the main road and a tree took down the lines. Hang in there my friend.
Picked up some work from the storm. One load of brush i hauled to the compost center. The line to get in was maybe 40 vehicles long. It was nuts there! No time to scrounge although my last load the guy next to me was unloading and i grabbed three smaller mulberry logs off his trailer. Weather Channel had a reporter live from Meriden, CT this morning. Our power went out for a couple hours yesterday and a couple minutes last night. Probably part of the restoration process.
Still no power. Could be a long time before it comes back on. Driving underneath trees hanging on the lines to get around. Haven’t seen a power truck yet. Did head to the spring yesterday and this morning again at daybreak. I’m not getting too rambunctious until the power comes on and I can take a nice shower At least washed my hair last night. Was gonna do the full navy shower on the deck but that water was still too cold LOL Maybe tonight. Nice straight sugar maple uprooted in the maple patch. Nice tree, not all gnarly but a good Straight 20” trunk. It snapped a 16” red oak on the way down. Never get into the maple patch. Now I noticed all the dead ash inside there. Smaller trees 8-12” size. I’ll get to it when I get to it A cherry tree will go in the stacks. Lots of oak tops also. Some big nasty pines which can get chipped up and the rest dragged into the woods. I didn’t even look in the woods yet except for some oak tops I can see from my yard. One big old gnarly bruiser too. Was hoping that ugly thing outlived me.
I took a walk in our sugarbush yesterday after work. First casualty was this big Oak across one of our trails. It split from the stump and peeled over: It's going to tricky to remove as it's under lots of stress and a good portion is hung up in another tree.
Next one was this HUGE pine across the trail. Of course the dead one standing behind the roots of this one is doing fine.... From the root end. It's hard to see from here but the trunk is probably 36"+ at the base and it had to have been close to 90' tall. There were several dead ash that were slated to be taken down that succumbed to the wind: This tree with the white tape around it was second from the top of one line of tappable trees. It snapped off about 25' off the ground and was probably 18" DBH.
Found a dead fawn during my walk (I don't believe it was storm related...? This tree was not a maple, but it took out at least 3 smaller maples when it fell... This maple was on the first line we ever ran about 5 years ago when we first went to lines. There were tons of branches down throughout as well. This was just in the 7+/- sugarbush area. I did not walk all of the 42 acre woodlot, but I am hoping that since the wind was mainly from the SE, that they were somewhat sheltered as there is a large mountain on the south end of most of that area. We will see..... We lost some aluminum rake trim off the house, but other than that our buildings came out intact and no one was hurt which we were thankful for!
Thanks for the offer. Always got the old ladies house if I get desperate LOL I need my internet . Have to drive out into town to get cell reception. Winch on log arch is acting up. Winds out but only clicks when going in. Solenoid I think. And I forgot to take a pic of the model number before I left the house doh!!! Finally got some more gas tho. Central Ct was dry for awhile there. Take care you woodhoarders.
Got most of the trunk sections of the first red oak bucked. The tree was a double and the twin to it fell in the other direction onto my neighbor's property. There are several downed oaks and a hickory on that side. I had a quick chat with him this morning and he was more than happy to let me take as much wood as I wanted off his property. (He used to be a tree guy so he knows all too well the work involved). I'll probably pick away at it for a long time to come.
