brenndatomu does your HPWH need a drain for the condensate? After Semipro post, I see that his condensing dryer needs a drain, if I were to upgrade my appliances, it would make sense to pair them together. Do these appliances have actual pumps, or are they gravity drain systems? Had to edit post, auto-screwup labeled it as a condescending dryer
My dryer has a pump and my HPWH condensate gravity drains. Edit: you might consider my drier condescending. It's always looking down on me since it's sitting above the washer.
Thanks guys. If I make the transition I'll have to figure out a drainage system. Our place is concrete/cement slab foundation. Will have to come up with something, but seems like a great setup.
When you have kids in the home you tend to find out about recovery times on water heaters. Years ago, when we were renting we moved and the new place had no gas and everything was electric. Young kids taking baths drain a water heater pretty quick . Now put the water heater on its own meter for a cheaper rate and have the power only on during off-peak hours (at night) and anyone wanting a (warm) late night shower can easily be SOL. LOL.
Why use a product that is scheduled to fail in under 10 years , and needs replacing ? They leak, use inefficient power, have usage limits with recovery time. Most of the world like Japan have used tankless water heaters for decades. Our Rinai is close to 20 years old for limitless hot water for multiple outlets at once with no downtime except for a 1X/year flush. It does use more BTU LP than power for tank heaters. But..... Tank heaters also need draining each year. So, explain why the use of an old, unreliable technology ?
The reason I would not want an LP tank less heater is the price of LP. If you use less than 500 gallons a year the price delivered is crazy like 4.50 a gallon.
I just replaced a 6 year old water heater that had a 6 year warranty for the neighbor. (Was leaking but still working. )
I was using LP for a gas fire place a couple times a year. When the lady asked why I wanted them to come get their tank I told her I didn’t think that it was right my neighbor pays 2.89 a gallon and I’m being charged 4.50 a gallon. I can fill a grill tank to use the fire place but I would not want to do it for hot water.
We bought a heat pump dryer a couple of years ago, it was much more expensive than a conventional dryer but having a friend who worked at Miele helped. It’s a condensing type with a built in pump - we just empty the water out after each use (in fact we use it for the steam iron as it doesn’t seem to cause any scale) but you can plumb it in permanently. It works very well and costs almost half (from actual measurements) the amount to run compared to a conventional machine. My main worry would be if something went wrong with it in years to come as it’s quite complex compared to a standard machine and probably not something I’d attempt to repair myself! I don’t think heat pump water heaters are very popular here yet but they sound like a great idea!
Right about LP pricing Warner. BUI ! Like anything, you have to make noise in a capitalist system. Pricing of anything is variable; its dependent on demand... your demand. You need to do due diligence like before in N.H. regs. Find other options. We use much less than ( < ) 100 gallons of LP per year. The supplier was charging us 3X what a neighbor with usage of more than 400 G/Y . They were paying 2.47/G , we were charged $4.73/G. I told ( not asked ) the manager to drop the price to 2.47. After a B.S. session from him on 2 talks, I told him to take the tanks backs immediately since I will contract with another LP supplier for 2.37. He dropped the price. Was it a PITA ? Yes. Worth the time and stress ? Yes. Warner, be your own advocate. Don't wimp it.

Suburban Propane in our area has been pulling this kinda crap for years. Id never use propane for any reason!
This guy has an answer for everything! I don’t have much leverage buying less than 20 gallons a year. They could care less having me as a customer.
Same here, I was in some epic battles with them over the years and they won every time!! Even when they agreed to something they usually did not honor it!
I believed that too until I had a house that only had 20 breakers. So dryer and stove went to propane. Then I found a great deal on 6 month old propane kitchen stove and got it for my wife for her birthday, 5 years ago. I have new 200 amp electric service now and can switch to electric appliances. BUT my wife really likes the stove
I had a big electric one that leaked for 5 years. Maybe longer but we sold the house. Tiny leak, even the home inspector missed it. Electric rates are extremely high here so given a choice electric is the last choice. I was trying to convince my sisters to stop buying propane and switch their hot water back to oil and they finally did it when their boiler needed replacing and the rep showed them all the exact same numbers I did. The propane company they bought propane from wanted them to pay to remove the propane and then remove the tank so it is just sitting there.
