Saw a Craigslist ad for wood already cut into firewood size. No pic available. Only a mile or 2 from the house. I drive up and there a good amount of red maple. The guy said there was a bit of black ash too. I grabbed the small bit of that he had a got and a pickup load of the maple. There was a lot there but I cherry picked the rounds that I liked the best. Although I’m years ahead on wood now, I like how the maple dries very fast. In the pic, the rounds are from today. The splits on bottom are from previous processing I haven’t stacked yet.
Nice spot to be in! (years ahead and having the luxury of being fussy about which pieces you feel are worth your time and which aren’t) Red maple is definitely one of my favorites. Nice, clean, bright burning wood. Looks like you missed the downpours on your end of the state too. We got hammered early afternoon up my way.
You’re right. We got a hint of mist and that’s all that how it is often in SE CT. The cooler water from outside the Sound knocks down a lot of storms. Did you see any high winds? I heard there was a tornado watch in places in CT
Very little wind in Bristol, just some much-needed heavy rain. I went around and top covered most of my stacks before the sky opened up but it seemed like the rain soaked everything anyway.
That soft maple is one of the fastest drying wood there is. I hear some folks do not like it but we surely do. However it is not the best for holding long fires. Best for daytime use. It also can make some of the best kindling you've ever had and splits super easy.
There was until 10PM last night. I found out right before it expired as i turned on the weather channel to see on the hurricane.
Are you going to be on standby tomorrow, waiting with your chainsaw at idle for the storm to bring down some trees for you?!?! (I may be doing exactly that)
Not sure. Supposed to go to Mass for work three days but storm may postpone that. Landlord has a couple huge trees alog his section of driveway that have a nice lean to them. Wouldnt surprise me if one comes down. God forbid he has to spend money on tree removal. It will be interesting to see what comes down from the storm. Old friend of mine works for Wallingford electric and lets me know when there is downed wood/roadkill wood.
Sounds like a nice bargaining chip to me. They get knocked down, you cut them up, he gives you one month rent-free
Yeah, most landlords I've dealt with are like that... They all want perfect tenants but never give it much thought on how they could be a better landlord and keep good tenants.
