I saw a tree crew taking down a couple of medium sized dead/dying ash trees when I was running errands in the city. I casually rolled up and asked what they were going to do with the wood. One of the guys said "take it if you want it!" So I grabbed what they had cut into manageable sizes - plus one random piece of elm that one of the guys took out of his truck and tossed into mine. Can't complain about the price! 0C239FB7-925C-4A0F-93E5-7335C26A74A6.jpeg

    Nice score !
I was told they're really paranoid about EAB now, all ash has to go to a certain landfill for disposal. It costs the tree guy's money to dump it, so they're more than willing to let it go as firewood. Grab it when you can, nothing to be concerned about at our elevation.

Yeah, I heard the same thing. I take what I can get. No ash trees anywhere near me to worry about

Next time you score a load, ask the crew where they have to dump it. I think it's North of Westminster, maybe up to Windsor.
Maybe, meet them half-way?? I know I would.

Dontcha love when that happens? Looks like they got the lengths fairly consistent. What is you standard preferred round length?

There's a ton of great ash being cut and chucked here. Once my shed is done, I will hoard it all!!!

Nice work! Looks like it wasn't EAB'd that long ago, if at all. Stuff around here you can see the bark peeling the top layer and then the bark simply falling off you know the beetle was here years ago.

Hey buddy! I do love that! I prefer 18-21 inch length. My stove will take a 23 incher, but they can be a bit cumbersome for the misses. I only had to cut down a couple of the pieces I got yesterday. Good deal!

Great work Cash Larue I'm always to shy, or busy or something, to to stop and ask the arborists that I see what they are doing with the wood. I’m sure ive missed on a couple easy scores. You’ll really like the ash in a year or two.

From what I understand the EAB thing is a “when” not “ if” situation. Sadly, It seems like efforts to keep it away are fruitless.

Yes, it’s a “when.” There’s some hope coming from anecdotal evidence of resistant trees, but the odds of mature ash trees making it through this are minuscule.
In my area (western/central NY state), acres of ash are dead standing. I’ve had a few loads delivered of just EAB-killed ash. The tree guys I know say they could go days/weeks and cut nothing else.

Around here, cut to length is anything from 10" - 25"+. So get lots of chunks, mine and Lefty's stoves can handle 22" so we are flexible.
