This is a pretty mild shoulder season for me. Just three fires to this point. Low tonight of 27, but we are in the low to mid 50s during the day. We warm back up to 64 my mid-week next week. Our normal average temperature right now is suppose to be in the low 60s and our average highs in November should be in the 50s. But, it's been several years since we have had a normal fall. The last two or three Falls we have had snow in October. I'm not complaining as it means less wood used and less stove tending right now. Just a little weird. We had a very mild, and comfortable, summer and it looks like that is carrying through to fall. I don't mind cold temperatures. But I do not like it when we go right from a hot summer into a cold fall. Right now, this is really enjoyable. Hope it lasts through November.
Pretty much same here. This little cold snap is over after tonight and it looks like it will be mid 60s by late next week. Forecast models have been saying for a few days now that cold air will be dropping down out of Canada on 11/7 with freezing temps in the Carolinas on the 8th. I don't mind the mild weather at all, still have plenty to do outside and I'd rather not freeze my butt off doing it. Heck, I still need to cut the grass one more time.
Its been 10-15 degrees colder than normal here for the past couple weeks. I think BTU-wise I'll burn more wood, but cord-wise I'll burn less. I'm burning 75% hedge and 25% black locust right now, and will for most of the winter. I will probably finish up the year with some oak. Trying to get the old woodshed emptied out so I don't have to move wood twice. Might sound weird burning hedge in the shoulder season, but there's PLENTY more where that came from.
Our winter temps is usually 35-42 during the day and 18-25 at night during January and February. Nothing shocking. But, past several falls we have had October and November temps with highs in the 40s which really stretches out how long winter feels around here. So, still having temps in the 60s come November is a nice change.
Right now our daytime highs are still in the 50s with an occasional 60 and nightime is just now starting to dip to the 30s. My house has very good solar gain and gas is cheap so I dont burn till the daytime highs fall into the 40s, and I wont load up a full overnighter till the overnight low is below freezing. I'll still have windows open when its over 60. Last few years have been all over the map. Last year we had our first burn on halloween, the year before that it wasnt till December. Thats Nov/Dec weather here. In late Jan its more like 20s/30s dipping to the single digits at night.
It's been dipping down to around freezing on a regular basis here. Lowest was 24. Not sure what our "normal" winter temps are, but I'd guess mid-teens to 20 daytime, with forays around 10-15 overnight. We'll usualy get a few days or so around zero or below. Anything below ten, and the stove struggles. Been burning here for about 5 weeks or so, but the early part of that was very sporadic. Pretty much twice daily now, at least. I almost filled the stove last night, but only 3 splits were Oak......the rest was Poplar. If Mom wasn't here, I'd have had fewer fires.
Been in the low 20s to mid 40s here. Shoulder season is about over, from here on, we will have a fire 24/7 until April. No worries though, winter will be here soon. We will be walking on water soon
We've had highs of around 50 and lows into the mid 30s for a few weeks now. I disconnected my oil furnace a while ago, so if I don't burn the house is just too cold, so I've been burning twice a day for almost 6 weeks now. I think you guys probably have figured out I run a bit different setup than most, and am using a mass heater, so my burn regimen is different than yours. I've gone through just about half a cord of Fir at this point, which is more than in the past but only because I've gotten far enough ahead on wood that I don't need to be a heat miser any longer. My house is always around 70 now, it wasn't always that way. I used to be just like Dad, "put on a sweater if you're cold." Not any more, and that's in large part to what I've learned hanging out with you guys.
Very mild hear on the Canadian/U.S. border in Northern New York. I like it but am also looking forward to the colder weather. I hate bugs. The last two times I have been out putting up posted signs I found a tick or two on my clothes. I hate ticks, mosquitoes, deer fly, horse fly, black fly, and any other small little pest that BUG the chit out of me when I am outside. Cold weather sends them a packing for a while.
I've been burning a few splits of pine in the early mornings, it's just low 50's outside. Warms up to 80's by noon. Temps steadily dropping, we get to freezing overnight by January. freeze never lasts more than a week or two. Never really warms up in winter as the valley is locked in fog all day
Holy cow Mr A. When I said mild here I guess I should have said mild for us! We have had several freeze temperatures in the last few days. Warms up to 50 or so during the day now. Suppose to stay fairly mild like that and maybe even warmer next week. I am ready for some colder temperatures to start cutting wood. (I don't like bugs though.) So much nicer to cut wood when it is colder out. Bring the 10-20 degree temp for working in for me!
Where u at browning we spise to be 30f tonight and I'm in sc. Not had a fire yet, I'm living with a 9 month pregnant woman. I'm freezing! But trying to hold off one more day or week. If need I'll runheat pump tonight. That's strange for me but I don't want to bake her out the house.!
Hope the next few weeks go good clemsonfor. I can sympathize with you there, been through that four times now! That is enough. Is this your first?
It is. She is actually cold tonight. That's a first . We can't be happier. She's t due till the 10th bit doctor thinks she has a week left.
Were having a little boy!! There will be a post with his picture. I been meaning to put a pic up of the belly .
Man, you guys must live in the tropics, our January and Febuary frequently top out in negative digits. Having it come on a bit quick this year, not a good sign.
