I've been told my military cooks that they put egg shells in the coffee grounds. They claimed it improved the taste. I can't say it did anything good or bad as their coffee was never great. It was hot and OK. I never expected more.

Lutefisk translated is lye fish. It is cod that had been preserved with some kind of lye. It was then dried so it could be kept during the winter months. I have had it boiled and served with melted butter. Others serve it with a white sauce. It is an acquired taste. Many Norwegians around here love it. They will travel all over the area to go to as many suppers as they can find. They are mostly held at Lutheran churches with a Norwegian background. The supper consists of lutefisk, meatballs, mashed potatoes and gravy, rutabagas, cranberry sauce and lefse with either pumpkin pie or apple pie or Norwegians cookies. All washed down with good egg coffee or milk.

I'll occasionally put a few grains of salt in strong or bitter coffee. It definitely helps to smooth it out.

I don't understand how that filter is getting wet prior to brewing? I've got a B&D that uses paper filters and the only time I've ended up with grounds in the basket, and into the coffee is when I forgot to put the pot underneath . The basket overflows and you can never clean well enough to get all the grounds out of the system since some of the stuff flows back into the reservoir and gets into the siphon lines. Those are a biotch to take out - and even then, there are other parts you just can't get to.

PSA - those sour cream containers aren't made to withstand heat without offgasing (that may kill you in like 30 years)

Its not. When the water starts the filter slowly gets saturated, sort of shrinks down then slowly starts to collapse. If it collapses far enough, then a portion of the filter will draw toward the center then wilt down till the water level comes up and then over the collapsed part, allowing water and grounds to run down under the filter.

EVERYTHING we eat comes in a plastic container on some sort. It'll probably give me alzheimers...but at least I'll be able to go home and forget about it...:D

My worst one was when I up to early and forgot to put water in the reservoir but just put the pot full of water back underneath. It puffed air into the grounds and blew them all over the counter

Wonder what kind of chemicals are leaching out of that thin cheap plastic in the presence of near boiling water....?

My previous 4 cup coffee maker that used #2 cone filters would do that. I always figured the paper folded back when I slid the coffee holder back home.
After a year or so of crappy/expensive/ environmentally unsound coffee from a tiny Keureg, I bought a Aeropress, which is good enough for my one-a-day indulgence. I've tried some wire basket filters and the ones I've tried always let a little more fines thru than paper filters usually do.
Every now and then I f@ck up even with the Aeropress and end up pouring the mess I just made thru a #2 cone filter that fits in a Melita single-serve pour-over thingie I used for a while. Or just dump it, start over or have a glass of orange juice instead. <--- tangent done.

I also use an aeropress. Although one time it came apart on me - literally. The two parts separated dumping near boiling water on my arm and grounds all over the kitchen. Took over 45 minutes to clean it up :( So, now I always make it IN the sink.

I wear my coffee pots out quickly, so I've had a couple different brands, every time I've gone with a different brand from Mr. Coffee I'm amazed how much better it tastes. And agreed, I don't appreciate the wide shallow basket they use either.

Chazsbetterhalf Lefse is made from potatoes. One uses russert potatoes and after they are cooked, they are riced. The recipe calls for some butter, milk and flour. It is rolled out thin and cooked on a flat griddle. I love it with butter and sugar on it and rolled up. Google lefse, there are some good pics of it.
