Could use a wood ID..

I think this may be oak, but I'm not certain.

It was one of the branches the gasline people cut last fall and I drug down to the house.





If it is oak, fairly certain it's red oak, as I'm pretty sure that's the only oak species I've got on the property.

It's an oak. The bark puts it in the red oak family, but the wood color does not look like the northern red oak that I cut here in Michigan.

 

Bark does look like oak but I’ve never seen end grain on any oak look like that. I see tiny fiber tears which I never see on oak. Also don’t see the open pores I always see with oak. Need to see some splits

 

No rays, no oak.

 

Looks like poplar to me. Does it smell sour?

The center wood looks poplar-like to me as well.

 

I wouldve gone all in on the bark alone that its red oak, but now looking at the ends i say no to oak.

 

Popple wins. The nose knows.

 

Looks to be a big mature Bigtooth Aspen. We call them popple here. Good shoulder season wood.

 

Basswood popped in first for me... but I haven't cut any of it in years so my memory could be playing tricks on me...

Could very well be poplar, have more of that on the property than oak.

The bark on this on is different than most..

Did have a bit of a smell, but it wasn't obnoxious, so I didn't pay it much heed.

Will be split soon.

Anything other than dead and dry standing ash is being processed for next year.

But if that were oak, it woulda got lonely on it's own little pallet for a few years

 

I'm not a hardwoods expert, but doesn't oak weigh alot more than poplar?
