Took out a birch that was smothering one of my favorite trees (hemlock). Wow its hot! Im clearing a bit of land on the other side if the river. These are my first pics with the new iphone 11.
Funny, most view hemlock as a weed. We used to have some big ones here when I was growing up but the were cut before I took ownership of the property.
Yeah really, I would’ve been the guy to fell the hemlock to make room for the birch...if only with the hope of someday using the birch for firewood! But those hemlocks do look nice in the winter blanketed in snow... That’s a beautiful piece of land too.
Personally I think hemlock would make better firewood than birch. And a white birch are prone bending and snapping under snow/ice load. Very difficult to grow in a yard/ open area in these parts.
The one pictured is a yellow birch, so it’s much better firewood than a white birch and probably a little denser/stronger. Compared to hemlock I can’t say, I’ve never burned hemlock.

I know right, we were just up on the RR bed saying that yesterday. I have a bunch of the RR spikes too.
I chose to leave the hemlock over the birch because i like the way it looks in winter. It was a pretty big yellow birch, biggest iv cut in a while
I still have 6 or 7 rounds from the base on the other side of the river so it was a pretty good size. This little pickeroon from forester shop is a great little purchase. I havnt bent down for a split during stacking in 2 weeks. $24 i think
We used to raise hell out there. Have you been to the quarry? Fun jump just gotta make it over the tree growing out below. It’s probly posted now it’s been 15+ years since I have been there. We used to jump at night under headlights of the trucks. I’m lucky to still be walking now that I look back.

Oh yea they have actually closed it 2 weeks ago, it was getting out of control crowded so they closed it for covid. Lots of non Mason residents showing up too. Its mason residents only or guests of residents
Yes, and even paper birch is betterwood for burning than hemlock. 20% more BTU's out of paper birch than hemlock.
Iv got alot of that cherry birch ( black birch they call it too i think) to burn from the quarry last summer/fall. Midwinter scored some too. I cooked with some and it was pretty nice
