If the forecast for tomorrow is correct, I'll have enough time to wash off the railings on the front porch and maybe start scraping, I'm hoping to have both sides painted by the end of July if not sooner.
All the newel post, balusters and the handrails on the front porch got cleaned today, hopefully tomorrow the scraping and sanding start on one side and then I'll go with the primer and paint. The second side will be done after I finish the first side.
After a day out on the water, I finished up sanding some spots so hopefully Mother Nature allows me to get once coat of primer on. I'll go with two coats of primer and one coat of paint on unless some of the worst needs a second coat of paint the all of it will get the second coat. The attached pictures are from the first scraping and sanding, I went over it a second time and then checked it again tonight. After the above is done, I'll start on the other side.
I didn't get all of what I was painting done, once the clouds started to roll in, I finished up. I think that two top rails were the only thing that didn't get paint. It looks like we'll be in for a wet two days so the painting will have to wait.
I put a second coat of primer on the side of the front porch I've been working on, hopefully tomorrow it will get a coat of paint. On Monday if the weather permits, I'll start the scraping and sanding on the other side. I'm hoping the second side is done by July 26th if not sooner. Once all the painting is done, maybe I can mill up some boards if the weather cools down some.
Tuesday was spent receiving a new washer and then making a run to my old hometown to water some flowers on some graves in the cemetery. I also made three other stops on my way back so the day was pretty much shot when I got back. Today I finished what was going to be done on Tuesday. I finished a bit of scraping and then sanded a lot of it again, I took the air compressor to everything I sanded, wiped it down with a dry cloth and then a damp cloth so the second side is ready for paint. I wanted it done by the end of this week but we might have rain coming in so we'll see how long it pushed my timeline back.
The first coat of primer is on the second side, the last coat of primer will go on tomorrow and the paint on Sunday.
I'm not sure Woodwidow , I don't think that I took any before pictures. I did get the second coat of primer on today, hopefully tomorrow a coat of paint goes on. I used Ultra White since I had some, it definitely looks a ton better but new paint always looks better. Just another day closer to getting in the woods for trail widening or getting some American Hophornbeam, the Rhino is ready to work. I'll be running the Rhino until I get certain trails wider for the RTV or like my wife calls it, Karl.
I painted my deck this week (Sanded, knock down the nails and two coats), but need to do the rails still. I am going to try one of these multitools it just came in the mail. Did you do all that sanding by hand? I plan to try a scraper attachment and the little triangular sander. And I think I will try my power washer too.
Some sanding was done with a orbital sander, detail sander and a block sander and a scraper. The bottom picture should be a Stortz Oval Scraper, I have one but not sure of the maker, works great in the hard to get at areas. I have a heavy rubber block sander and the lighter plastic block sander that I used some. I should've sanded it one more time with the orbital sander with a fine grit but that water went over the dam. It took me longer but we had some days you couldn't paint, the humidity was so dang high we just had to get out in the boat.
Great job on your deck, we have TimberTech for our deck flooring. I not sure if you can paint it but I'll check it out.
Oh, if I had a composite decking I'd have to find something else to do - no painting needed! That's a nice product. Our house is about 25 years old. The porches have taken a beating but they are Western Red Cedar, so worth the time. I was amazed to find that you are conquering what I am trying my best to avoid, but will have to face, my porch rails have take a terrible beating, especially right down there where the stiles meet the bottom rails. I'm sure someone (like Timbertech) makes composite components, but sanding and repainting will have to do for me this time. Thank you so much for sharing the details of your project - here's hoping you get some dry weather for your primer.
We had a nice breeze with some hot temps today, but the majority of the last side is done. I avoided ours too, they can drive you nuts or make you see double depending on how many you're painting but that is pretty much over. I will clean and check them every year instead of waiting almost 17 years to paint them. Not all the wood railings are painted with one coat of paint but the balusters are, the top & bottom rails will get a coat of paint and the post will need another coat of paint too. I guess the best part of the day was a little cool off in the Brook, not much water coming down through but it felt nice and the Rhino stretched its legs some.
While having coffee this morning, I changed my plans and cleaned one side of the TimberTech on the front porch. I used what I call a teardrop scraper to clean out the grooves especially where the weep holes are, I then vacuumed all the sand and dirt up. After that I took clean water with an HDX scrub brush and I cleaned the TimberTech on that side, six buckets of clean water and that part was done until I decided to use a roller mop to clean up the dirty water. After I was done with the above, I cleaned the four chairs we have on the front porch with water and Dawn, that worked out great.
Buzz Benton , I forgot the most important gear that I have for painting iffin you have to be on your knees, these are great. I bought these at Lowe's when I was waterproofing the cement blocks on the new garage in 2018.
Thanks Woodwidow , I'll wait on cleaning all the TimberTech in the fall. I'm pretty much finished the painting except for the casing around the front door, I painted most of it today with one coat of paint and then it started to rain so I put everything away. I'll get a second coat on it tomorrow and then I'll take a break from the painting. I will be painting two metal doors before fall and some touch up on the front porch, hopefully some plywood that we have for the garage will get painted and put up before winter and then I'm done.
I'll be back painting pretty soon, there won't be any sanding so that will be nice. Hopefully the weather stays nice so I can finish the painting.
