Not sure what kind it is, but, its totally covering her patio roof and most of her garage. Plus, its only about 4 ft from her patio roof edge at this time. I've noticed several limbs are dead or dying, and one big one, about 10" across was totally covered with a growth of some kind. Obviously dead. I've been helping her with her yard, shrubs, and such and finally convinced the tree needed to be cut back. Yesterday was the perfect day, she agreed to let me trim it up and it was cooler here in the PNW. Started out by under cutting the big limb that is dead, then followed up with the top cut, it dropped off just like i planned. I was able to cut it from the patio roof and i had plywood to protect the roof and to stand on. Then i went after the limbs over the house and the garage. Used the 193 top handle on those. I used the Stihl 261 on the big limb, really like that saw, fast cutting and its a lazer. By the time i finished cutting i had a pretty big pile of limbs in the front driveway, cut them down to a manageable size, put them in the recycle bin, then used the 261 to cut them up even more, worked like a charm. Took me about 3.5 hrs from starting the trimmer for her yard, mowing it, then doing the limb job above her house, it turned out looking fantastic and after i cut the limbs above the garage , and away from her chimney it really had a nice shape to the rest of the canopy of the tree. But, its going to have to be taken down, i can do it all from the patio roof, and by climbing some of it. I don't see any problems getting it down and out of her back yard. The really good thing, she was really happy with the job i did, that made it all worth while for me. Its nice when people appreciate a good job. I'll try and post some pictures of the biggest rotten limb later on.
Here's some pics of the neighbors tree, i should add this, when the big limb hit the ground, it literally exploded , it was so rotten the wood was actually spongy feeling and light as a feather for about 4 ft in the top.

Nice job B.Brown Neighbor is much safer now. If it was that low and covering that much.. what's the condition of her roof?? If she has a shingle roof, they don't take well to too much shade
Its her patio roof, its metal, but, the whole tree should come down, its dying up in the other limbs as well. Its a asphalt type of shingles but, i noticed a lot of moss on the side where the tree is, i'll treat that for her this fall as well. I know i and my wife have watched that big limb for the past 2 yrs and finally was able to convince her that it needed to be cut off. She was shocked at how bad of condition it was in.
Gotta be Sweet Home Oregon. However, now I've got sweet home sanitation ( Alabama) in my head. Are those green leaves from the tree in question?
It was, but there's nothing like sweat to help clear the mind!! lol. And, it gave me a chance to use the top handle 193 stihl and the stihl 261 both are really great saws. When, if, i get to cut it down, i'll use the 044 or the husky 266, or maybe the echo 590, decisions , decisions,ha,ha,ha. Hay, i enjoyed it, that's the good part!!
Treat?? How so? I have roofs with no overhanging limbs, but are north facing that moss and lichens seem to like. Zinc strips are supposed to work.
Dawn dish soap and water does a good job of killing moss. Just spray it down good and it causes moss to dry out.
zinc strips do work, i've seen roofs with moss on them with the strips and where the water has carried the material off the strips, its clean and very little moss on the roof.
