Went to look at this ad for free firewood. 2 minutes from my house. Walked up and my jaw about dropped. Going to be some work getting it out. Guy working there has a bulldozer. Said he'll help move closer to the road to load. What do you all see? (Besides btus)
Thats a FHC jackpot. Good thing he has the dozer and take advantage of it for sure. Lots of work, but that goes with lots of wood.
That is a score and a half! Hope he doesn't get too much dirt in it while skidding it out for you. No idea on the types of wood for me. Could be worth a case or two of beverage.
Of course its all pushed DOWN the hill. Need 4 wheel drive just to get uo out of stone driveway . The property is on a dead end road. So my plan is to buck a bunch, have them take the rounds to the road in the dozer and move it to the road. Guy working there said had 3 people come look and never came back. I'll make room. Goal is to grab what primo stuff I can first and get other stuff later.
Sounds like most of my big scores, only it was me and my son doing the moving to the road. Same thing with most people never coming back after looking at it. That's a nice pile, should be good for months of scrounging
Anyone know what those logs are on the bottom of the pile in pic#3? Look like oak but a flattened texture.
I’m thinking cottonwood but never had any. I saw some nice big logs like that on FB but never went after them.
Im thinking they're chestnut oak. I didnt get any pics but the base of the one has that big rectangular chunky bark look. The leaves make me think this is also some sort of oak. Swamp white oak?
Danged if I know. My property is loaded with standard red oak and Black Birch. Once I get away from those I’m lost
Started to work on the pile today. Not going to lie, the heat started to get to me. Started with a birch that was on top. I only cut 7 rounds off of it and thought better of cutting more, as the footing was getting a little sketchy. My son moved them to the tahoe. He didnt seem to mind the heat or hike. Said it was helping him get in shape for soccer. Oh to be young. The builder helper said just cut up everything I want and when its drier, he'll move everything to the top of the driveway with loader. Ended up bucking some oak and a poplar that was in the way. More oak than I thought is there and it's HEAVY.
It is good of them to help you out like that. When he moves them is he going to give you a hollar. Hope nobody snatches them out from underneath you.
I wasn't able to go and cut yesterday. Went after dinner tonight and was greeted by this NOOOOOOOO!!! A guy with a sawmill came and went to work. Did more in a day than I could in a 5 days. He took out the real big chestnut oak and a whole bunch of others. Cut the root balls off of most of them. Guess he claimed them. Guy working there told the mill guy that he couldnt take anything that has been cut on. So that leaves me a whole bunch of tulip poplar and hopefully he'll leave the 2 oak logs, and birch that I started to buck. Had to stop because the poplar was in the way. I did get a 20" diameter x 30' oak thats along the house. I will say, when I saw some of those oaks, I thought that its almost criminal to cut them for firewood and not planks Story of my life, day late and dollar short. Guess I have to find another epic scrounge.
