I was walking in the woods awhile back and I came across these two trees. My guess was Poplar, Ash or possibly Black Locust. I've never seen a Locust in my area though. Closest was at work almost an hour away.

I had some Bigtooth Aspen that had bark like that but I'm not sure what yours is.

Have any leaf pics? Bark sure looks like locust around here. Bark is too deep for ash.

Leaf pics would help. Only a few trees are easily identifiable by bark alone.

Leaf pictures would help. Kind of looks like black locust. Kind of looks like cottonwood too. I've seen both in your state.

When I took the pictures there werent any leaves on the tree yet. There were buds on the ground below it. I'll see if I can get another pic later in the week. Its a little bit of a hike from my house through the woods.

They look like Maple buds. Could it be a Norway Maple? The bark images online look similar.

Here's another pic of the tree

Looks like poplar, maybe tulip poplar though .
Tulip poplars don't grow around here, that I know of and Ive only seen young-ish ones.
Kinda deep fissures for regular poplars.

Im thinking poplar although bark is a bit deeply furrowed for any ive seen. The left tree in the #2 & 3 pics is birch. Buds look like red maple. Any pics of the leaves sirbuildalot?
This is tulip (yellow) poplar. Pics from a month ago when they were in bloom IMG_2628.JPG IMG_2630.JPG

Bark is too deep for Tulip/poplar, although when they are 3 feet around or more the bark is more furrowed and deep.
Could be chestnut oak, locust or cottonwood... hows that for a guess?  I’m thinking locust though..

That tree next to it is black birch.

look at Jo’s post on his recent locust find...

On a look through a cell phone, I'd say sassafras.

I was able to take a look before work. I took pictures, but the closest leaves were about 50 feet up in the air for both trees, with other trees canopies below them. The pictures don't show much. The leaves are almost heart shaped with pointed ends. I've deduced that they are most likely Eastern Cottonwoods. I looked at online images of Ash, Black Locust, Norway Maple, and Tulip Polar and none of the leaves for them match. The Cottonwood leaves and bark match what I have.

Yeah, cottonwood with that leaf shape.
