Red (Soft) Maple has a clear dark brown core. Rock (Sugar, Hard) Maple is usually all clear. Hard to tell in young tree bark. You can deliver the Yellow Birch to the tundra; there is little Yellow Birch Downeast. Too much Soft Maple here. Tundra toilet tanks are sweating now in the high heat ( 80's ) and high humidity. We need rain, though the heavy morning fog off the ocean does cool us some. Never enjoyed or acclimated to H² ( heat and humidity ) like in Pensacola swamps ( Camp Erwin). Stay safe all.
I lived in Florida in my early 20s... never again. Thanks for the tip on the maple. There’s so much birch here in CT it’ll make your head spin. I just grabbed another truckload tonight from the highway stash. Both sides of the road and both the on and off ramps are piled high with it. Try as I might I can’t grab it all, a lot will go to waste. (Unless someone from say... Maine comes down and grabs the rest before it rots)
Tundra ain't going down to CT...this week. P.S. My monster maul is retired due to owner's age. Maybe in CT. it works. Warning to Loon: when you get over 3 score, that maul will speak to your back.
What "?" ? Is it the M² effects on the body ? Clarification then--the Monster Maul weight after awhile kills the back. The Fiskars splitter is near as efficient and easier on your joints.
Too much thinking for my P-brain. ''Warning to Loon: when you get over 3 score, that maul will speak to your back.''
Grabbed some more maple last night along with that steady supply of birch. No dark core so I’m going to lean towards sugar maple.
I can attest to the “M2” monster maul speaking to my back. I have a love-hate relationship with it. It’s got sentimental value for me since it belonged to my grandfather and it plows through wood with a vengeance. However, like being in a bad relationship with the wrong woman, it’s no good for me and I know it. I’ve been eyeing a Fiskars in the short term but hoping to buy a splitter down the road.
I have my late fathers monster maul and rarely use it. I got the Isocore last Fall and love that even though the X27 splits 90% of my rounds. I had an X25 years back (shorter handle) and liked it better than the X27. Considering getting another one. Highly recommend any of these!
I was actually looking at the X25 for myself. I'm only 5'6" so the shorter handle would probably fit me best. Got to be comfortable while I'm slugging away. Short guy problems...
I find myslef choking up on the X27 all the time. When i first had the X25 (gift) i didnt like the shorter handle. I just bought one new online for $35 free shipping.
For the errrrrrr..."senior splitters" ---- go Fiskers. Macho days are long gone . Whiskey Tango Frank Nora a M² anymore. ???? Even Loon's "P Brain" can get this....I think.
Copy. Guys like you are why some folks up in Maine are called maniacs. All the ones I know that came from Fort Kent, Madawaska, Frenchville, Eagle Lake etc. all fit that description anyway.
Let me explain......... P.S. Those from way north are in "The Country". They have a shortage of teeth. It is why they use a "toothbrush". Even Msr. Loon gets this. Now we from Downeast are a different breed.
