I went to the transfer station at lunch and found some seasoned ash. I would think it does have cooties (ash borer). I am getting little scrounges like this every week now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Nice little grab Thom! Fun isnt it? How big is the pile to pick from? I have to go to our recycle/compost center soon and am looking forward to scrounging a few logs!
I was scrounging some dead ash a couple weeks ago and one of the beetles crawled out. Couldnt get the camera fast enough and didnt get a pic. Only time ive ever seen one in person. Never seen the larvae either.
This past winter I came across a couple larvae when I split a limb section open with my hatchet. They're just little white worms really. I had a fire going at the time so I brought the pieces inside and tossed the splits right into the blaze, noting how the larvae appeared to be stirring from their slumber just before they became incinerated. That'll show em!
This time of year I frequent both the East Granby and Old Saybrook transfer stations. It’s nice to get some ash from both. They both have big brush piles but if you take your time you can find some stuff. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Good deal. I'll have to look into getting a dump permit in my town. Although I remember being there years ago and seeing a big sign explicitly stating NO SALVAGING. Victimless crime, I suppose it's only illegal if you get caught.
Thanks Warner.I never saw one of those before and I hope I don't.You can't take wood out of Worcester because of these critters.Since they're spotted in New Hampshire and CT. they need to find another method to contain them.I only came across Ash once.It split nice had a nice color and a sweet smell.I was happy burning it.
Here is one I found plus a full picture of a male EAB. The 2 pictures are actually the same one; just blown up in size so you can see it better.
I think your right. All that noise about wood can't leave Worcester didn't stop the borer since it's in New Hampshire.I wonder how your Ash trees are doing ?
In that area they also have a problem with the Asian Longhorned Beetle too, so even more reason to quarantine the Worcester area.
