The other day I was looking at my pile of rounds of Ash I cut off of a stressed tree this winter. I saw small piles of very fine saw dust on the wood. I split one and found tiny holes in the sap wood. This wood is soft for some reason maybe turning punky I'm able to put my finger nail Into it a bit.

Question is what kind of bug is this and should I worry about it. Especially will it attack my house or anything like that.my wood pile is probably 50 feet from my house. IMG_20200617_183124.jpg IMG_20200612_170425.jpg IMG_20200612_170239.jpg

    Hi Stanley
Hi Stanley welcome to the FHC :handshake: Common to see the little borers in certain species of wood even if the wood is well covered and or in a shed. The emerald ash borer has decimated the ash tree. I dont think thats what yours is. The bug is a very distinct emerald green. I wouldnt worry about the little borers in your case. I dont bring wood close to the house until ready to burn in the colder weather when insects are dormant.

Thank you for the welcome and the insite. I'll keep cutting and spitting and I think I'll start selling as camp fire wood.

I didn't think it was EAB inaturualst app says it's some sort of carpet beetle but I'm not so sure about that. Then again I've probably only cut and split 3 cords of wood in my whole life. I'm clearly new to this game but I love it.

Don't worry about Brad. He is just a kid. Shoot, my wife and I will celebrate our 58th wedding anniversary in less than 2 weeks.

Welcome to FHC Stanley. Your pic of the bug is a little blurry but looks like a metallic wood boring beetle.

I don't burn wood, it's a long story. Luckily it has dogs, beer, and pictures. The short of it is I had a girlfriend last winter who had a wood stove so on my spare time is cut split and stack wood for us to burn. Now that I'm single and lucky I still have my land, beer, and 50 acres I still go out for fun, it was logged really hard 3 years ago so now I'm just poking around cleaning up bent over trees or opening spots I want open. One day I'll build on the land and burn wood. Here's a picture of what I was working on yesterday. IMG_20200617_182117.jpg

Good start. Since you plan on building a house and will be heating with wood, now is a good time to start working on a plan. You'll hear us talk about it all the time.
A guy by the name of Dennis aka Backwoods Savage, has a primer that is a great read. He will be along to post the link or one of gang will.
I see that the bucked wood has some saplings under it but what about the splits? Will want those up off the ground also. Get some pallets to put under them.

I'd love to read what ever is out their on this kind of stuff. I do have some small saplings under the splits. This will soon be moved off the ground on to pallets or into a for sale wood shelving. The tar you see right after my truck is a right of way that goes through my land to a lake with cottages on it. Hopefully I can make a bit of cash to buy some tools.

It is under the resource tab up above. Right of forum, three bars.
Also buZZsaw BRAD and jrider sell wood.
If you want to get ahold of someone just put @ before their name and it will send them an alert
If you want some storage shed ideas, check out T.Jeff Veal good morning thread. I can't think of the rest of the name of the thread. But he will be along.
